Santa Inoue's Tokyo Tribes Manga Gets Live-Action Film
posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Shion Sono (Suicide Club, Himizu, All Esper Dayo!) will direct a live-action film adaptation of Santa Inoue's Tokyo Tribe 2 (Tokyo Tribes) manga. Sono is going to hold open auditions on YouTube for the film's cast.
Sono has opened a YouTube channel for the film, and he and Inoue have both recorded video messages to give their comments on the upcoming project. The channel is also streaming a video describing how to submit an audition video for the film, and a video that demonstrates two sample auditions. In their video, those auditioning must introduce themselves, describe and demonstrate a special skill, act out a scene that includes their favorite character from the series, and give a message to the director. Those chosen from the YouTube auditions will undergo further auditions in person. Filming will begin this summer.
The original manga takes place in the near future in Tokyo where rival street gangs fight each other for turf. When the rivalry between two of the gangs gets more personal, the fighting turns into an all-out war.
Tokyopop published six of 12 volumes of the Tokyo Tribe 2 manga (under the name Tokyo Tribes) in North America. Madhouse adapted the same manga series into the 13-episode Tokyo Tribe 2 TV anime series in 2006. Tokyo Shock released the live-action film adaptation of Inoue's The Neighbor No. Thirteen manga on DVD.
Inoue ended his Tokyo Tribe 3 sequel manga last March and his Dan Da Barbarian manga last April. He will launch a new manga this summer.
