New show from Mononoke's Nakamura to be released via digital outlets, home video

North American anime licensing company Sentai Filmworks announced on Wednesday that it acquired the tsuritama television anime series. The anime will be released "through select digital outlets soon with a home video release to follow."

tsuritama is the latest project from director Kenji Nakamura (Ayakashi - Samurai Horror Tales, Mononoke, Kūchū Buranko, C). The SF (seishun/adolescent fishing) story is set on the island of Enoshima in the Shōnan area south of Tokyo, and it follows four idiosyncratic youths: the one-quarter French, uncommunicative high school student Yuki (Ryota Ohsaka), the fishing enthusiast and self-proclaimed alien Haru (Miyu Irino), the island native Natsuki (Kōki Uchiyama), and the mysterious Indian Akira (Tomokazu Sugita) with his constant duck companion TAPIOCA.

Yûichi Takahashi (Macross Frontier, Iron Vendetta) is adapting the original character designs by Atsuya Uki (Cencoroll). Toshiya Ono (Suite Precure, Eiga Suite Precure: Torimodose! Kokoro ga Tsunagu Kiseki no Melody) is in charge of the scripts. Kuricorder Quartet (Allison & Lillia) is composing the music, and the studio A-1 Pictures is animating the project.

The series premiered on Fuji TV's late-night Noitamina timeslot in Japan on April 12. Crunchyroll is already streaming the anime into several countries as it airs in Japan.

Update: More background information added.
