Japanese Box Office, February 26-27

The first film in Shinsuke Satō's live-action adaptation of Hiroya Oku's Gantz action manga slipped from #1 to #2 in its fifth weekend on Kogyo Tsushinsha's chart. On Box Office Mojo's chart, it earned the equivalent of US$1,772,411 on 410 screens to add to its total of US$34,911,729.
Macross Frontier: Sayonara no Tsubasa, the second anime film based on Shōji Kawamori and Satelight's Macross Frontier science-fiction series, opened at #4 on Kogyo Tsushinsha's chart. (It opened at #3 on Box Office Mojo's chart.) Moviegoers watched it 81,772 times on 38 screens in two days for a box office total of 117,803,100 yen (about US$1,448,102).
The live-action film version of Asao Takamori and Tetsuya Chiba's classic boxing manga Ashita no Joe dropped from #4 to #7 in its third weekend with US$1,007,281 on 277 screens. It now has a gross-to-date of US$10,068,275.
The live-action film adaptation of Mainichi Kaa-san also dropped from #6 to #9 in its fourth weekend on Kogyo Tsushinsha's chart. It earned US$511,083 on 134 screens. It now has a total of US$5,732,705.
The new #1 film was The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
