Mainichi Kaasan Family Comedy Manga Gets Film Adaptation
posted on by Egan Loo
44-year-old actress Kyoko Koizumi will star with her former husband, 43-year-old Masatoshi Nagase, in a movie adaptation of Rieko Saibara's Mainichi Kaa-san family comedy manga. The manga follows the humorous everyday experiences of Saibara's own life with her two children.
The manga has been running in the Mainichi Shimbun paper every Sunday since 2002, and over 1.5 million copies of the six compiled volumes have been published so far. The manga already launched a television anime series last year, and Crunchyroll has been streaming the television anime under the name Kaasan - Mom's Life.
Shōtarō Kobayashi is directing the movie. Filming is slated to begin in August, and the movie will open in Japan early next year. According to the Sankei Sports newspaper, this is the first movie (in Japan) in which a real-life divorced couple stars as a fictional married couple. (The two stars did act in separate scenes in the 2006 live-action film adaptation of Moyoco Anno's Sakuran manga.)
