Tsumiki no Ie, Piano Forest, Kaiba Win Media Arts Awards

The Japanese government's Ministry of Cultural Affairs has announced the winners of the 12th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards on Tuesday. Kunio Katō's "Tsumiki no Ie" ("The House of Small Cubes") anime short won the Grand Prize in the Animation Division; it had already won the top award at France's Annecy International Animated Film Festival in June. Makoto Isshi's Piano no Mori (The Piano Forest), the inspiration for the recent anime film of the same name, won the Grand Prize in the Manga Division.
Masaaki Yuasa's Kaiba science-fiction love story and Koji Yamamura's "A Child's Metaphysics" experimental short were among the four winners of the Prize for Excellence in Animation. Satoru Makimura's Real Clothes shōjo fashion manga and Daijiro Morohoshi's Shiori to Shimiko supernatural horror manga were among the four winners of the Prize for Excellence in Manga.
The Tenori-on digital musical instrument won the Grand Prize in the Entertainment Division. The Wii Fit game for the Nintendo Wii console and Balance Board accessory was among the four winners of the Prize for Excellence in Entertainment. Brazilian artist Marcio Ambrosio won the Grand Prize in the Art Division for his Oups! art installation.
The 12th Japan Media Arts Festival will be held in Tokyo from February 4 to February 15 next year. Previous winners of the Media Arts Festival Awards have included Gainax's Gurren Lagann and Mitsuo Iso's Dennō Coil science-fiction anime, Yamamura's acclaimed "Franz Kafka's A Country Doctor" short, Takehiko Inoue's Vagabond and Real manga, Nintendo's Nintendogs pet simulator, Aniplex's Kamichu! slice-of-life school anime, and Mamoru Hosoda's The Girl Who Leapt Through Time time-traveling anime remake.
