Animax Pitches Yakitate!! Japan in Singapore with Bread
posted on by Egan Loo
As part of the promotion for Animax's Southeast Asian English television premiere of the Yakitate!! Japan breadmaking anime series on November 28, Singapore's BreadTalk store chain is offering Yakitate!! Japan buns during November. The anime is based on Takashi Hashiguchi's original Weekly Shonen Sunday manga, which famously depicts bread-making in the style of shōnen fighting tournament manga.
The story centers on Azuma, a boy who grows up with one real talent: making delicious bread. His lifelong dream is to create "Ja-Pan," a national bread that Japan can truly call its own. ("Pan" is the Japanese word for bread that was borrowed and slightly altered from Portuguese.)
Two buns sell for S$2.50 (about US$1.73) in a BreadTalk sale that runs from November 5 to November 30. The anime will run in Singapore every weekday at 8:00 p.m. Japan has seen similar bread-selling campaigns with different companies since the anime first premiered in that country in 2004. Viz Media has been releasing the manga version in North America since 2006, but no company has yet announced plans to license the anime for North America.
