Latest One Piece Cup Noodle Ad Shows Vivi's Heartbreaking Departure
posted on by Kim Morrissy
In spring, Cup Noodle launched its "Hungry Days" animated ad campaign focusing on The One Piece characters in school uniforms, leaving fans "hungry" for more. Since then, Cup Noodle has released two ads focusing on Zoro and Nami's school days. The third ad, which was released online on Friday, focuses on Vivi and her heartbreaking departure from her friends after transferring to a new school.
The ad shows flashbacks of Vivi's high school life with her Straw Hat friends. When the time comes for her to depart, her friends send her a video of themselves doing the iconic pose from the manga where they raise their arms in the air with their backs turned to Vivi. In this ad, however, they're holding cup noodle packets as a symbol of their friendship.
The 30-second ad features over 50 One Piece characters - see if you can spot all the cameos.
Like the previous ads, manga artist Eisaku Kubonouchi (Chocolat, Carole & Tuesday) redesigned Eiichiro Oda's iconic characters. Kubonouchi also redesigned Studio Ghibli's Kiki, the titular Heidi, Girl of the Alps, and Sazae-san in previous Cup Noodle ads. The ad's music is provided by the band BUMP OF CHICKEN, and the production studio is SHAFT.
In 2017, Cup Noodle launched its "Hungry Days" ad campaign, a series of commercials that starred famous anime characters at the precipice of their youth to invoke a specific, nostalgic feeling. The previous "Hungry Days" campaign concluded with a romantic confession against an apocalyptic backdrop.
