Kirby's Dream Land, Nintendo's first game of the Kirby series, debuted in 1992. Last year marked the 25th anniversary of the franchise. Apart from replaying the games, fans can listen to the franchise's distinctive music to celebrate the series and its iconic pink puffball. Tokyo Otaku Mode is giving fans a new way to enjoy the games' soundtracks with a Kirby 25th Anniversary Pupupu Paper-Tape Music Box.
The music box comes with music sheet cards for "Green Greens" (Kirby's Dream Land), "Rainbow Resort BGM" (Kirby's Adventure), "Gourmet Race" (Kirby Super Star), and "Bouken no Hajimari" (Kirby's Return to Dream Land), plus a bonus jingle interlude music sheet card.
The music box costs 10,000 yen (about US$89), and the reservation period is running from December 28 to February 28. Orders are expected to ship in May.
The kit uses Mieru Record's Otowa music box, which Japanese papermaker Tokyo Shiki sponsored. The music box won a jury prize at the 17th Annual Japan Media Arts Festival in 2013. Other music sheet card releases for the Otowa allow users to read manga while cranking the music box. Tokyo Otaku Mode also released an I am Setsuna game-inspired Otowa music box in 2016.
Other releases to mark the 25th anniversary of the Kirby franchise include an orchestra concert, new merchandise, lottery prizes, and a poll to choose fans' favorite Copy Ability. Nintendo has a new Kirby game for the Nintendo Switch, titled Kirby Star Allies, in development for a 2018 release.
