New Chinyūki Theater Ad Warns Patrons Against Using Cell Phones
posted on by Eric Stimson
Japanese theater patrons this month may find themselves being admonished not to using cell phones during the movie from an unlikely source: Chinyūki.
The ad features Tarō (Ken'chi Matsuyama) bickering with his companion, Genjō (Kana Kurashina), apparently very profanely. But it turns out Genjō's chain isn't the only one Tarō's yanking. The tagline promises "A truly BLEEPing live-action movie."
Chinyūki is a puerile parody of the Chinese classic Journey to the West, this time featuring a troublesome kabuki actor named Tarō Yamada (which in Japan is a legal placeholder name for men of unknown identity). It is based on a manga which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1990 to 1992 and in Business Jump from 2009 to 2010. The film will premiere on February 27. For a better sense of its irreverent take on the source material, see the trailer. The manga is mostly known overseas from Tarō's appearance in the Shonen Jump crossover fighting game J-Stars Victory Vs.
Other Japanese movies that recently ran promotional theater manner ads include Sailor Suit and Machine Gun: Graduation, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin and Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie Part 3: Rebellion.
