When Lisa Hayes' relationship with Rick Hunter fizzles, Claudia shares some advice with her. She tells Lisa the story of her courtship with the late Roy Fokker - a stormy affair that blossomed into love. Communication is the most important thing. Claudia counsels, and Lisa should let Rick know how she feels.

Minmei has returned from a morale-boosting tour of the frontier, and she's eager to see Rick. He can't turn down her invitation, and keeps Lisa waiting for a picnic they have planned. When he finally arrives, things go well until Lisa smells Minmei's perfume on Rick's scarf and leaves Rick to ponder his conflicting emotions.

While the humans prepare to counterattack the Zentraedi invaders, Admiral Gloval promotes Lisa Hayes to commander of the newly built SDF-2, and she finally finds the courage to tell Rick of her affection for him. Forced to confront his feelings, Rick realizes he loves Lisa and he leaves Minmei as the Earth forces fly into battle.

In his frenzy to destroy the Earthlings, Khyron mounts a climactic attack that disables the already weakened SDF-1. Using his ship as a brutal weapon, he continues his mission of destruction, steering his ship into a head-on collision that unleashes awesome devastation and decides the fates of Gloval. Lisa and the populations of SDF-1 and SDF-2 - and of Khyron himself. The consequences mark the end of an era in Earth's relations with the aliens.
