If you listen closely at around the 9 minute mark of episode 5, when the anti-unification forces are preparing to sortie, as DD and Nora face each other, the music suddenly changes to, of all things, a segment of the main theme from "Chicken Run."
In episode 1, the BGM track "VF-0" contains a sample of "Klendathu Drop," from Basil Pouledoris' score of the 1997 film Starship Troopers.
The "Love Sticks" shown in episode 1 are taken from a real-life tradition observed by the inhabitants of the Chuuk islands of the Federated States of Micronesia.
In episode 2, two brand names mentioned in the story - "Appale Genki" and "Meriken Burger" - are actually references from the 2000 Shoji Kawamori/Satelight TV series Earth Girl Arjuna. As a matter of fact, Arjuna herself appears on TV in episode 3.
Spot the Shameless Plug: In episode 3, Aries' camcorder is branded "Satelight" and "Tin House," the two animation studios behind this series.
