I am hoping for the best for Skip Beat!'s Kickstarter attempt, and considering that it's already surpassed what it earned on IndieGoGo I think it will end up succeeding in the end. Personally, I have absolutely no interest in this show, so I won't be putting my money down, but I'll be rooting in spirit (if that counts in any way).
Happy to hear that Ann has Kaiji on her radar, and I hope Akagi (& One Outs, to complete the gambling anime link) is, too. I do hope that, eventually Pied Piper goes for something that I can sink my teeth into. Personally, my ideal wish would be to see if crowdfunding could be used for stuff that doesn't already have a notable fanbase & immediate support in the waiting, i.e. more obscure & the like, but I fully understand the risks on that front. Here's hoping Ann's concept of how Pied Piper will operate (the whole "3 titles/year" thing) works out for her. I also was the person who asked the question about how often mandated dubs are a requirement from licensors, because it does stay in the back of my mind when it comes to some of the anime I'd love to see licensed more than anything (aside from them being generally so ignored that I'm sure most licensing companies don't care about them in the first place, that is). A good episode, nonetheless. |

Alongside neglected shojo titles, I was also thinking about some of the more esoteric game & sports anime that traditional licensing has avoided like the plague. There are some well-regarded shows like Saki and Chihayafuru and Shion no Ou that feel like much better bets to get localizations if they could be crowdfunded than waiting around for a mainstream licensor to ever pick them up. I'll bet Chihayafuru, especially, would have little or no trouble getting funded - I know a lot of people who want that series.

skip beat is one of my all time favorite stories so I am so glad it is FINALLY HOPEFULLY getting an english release.

When this campaign launched, I felt a little guilty about having a bunch of money in for Escaflowne, which hardly needs crowdfunding, when this one was going to have a lot more trouble, particularly given the Indiegogo skepticism. So, I cancelled my Escaflowne pledge and pledged to Skip Beat on IGG instead.
As for the problems so many fans had with IGG -- understandable, in the "you only raised 1/3 of your goal, so what happens now with the $50 I gave you" scenario -- I have to wonder if a pre-funding campaign wouldn't have helped work the kinks out ahead of time. Announcing "hey, we're launching crowd-funding for Skip Beat in a month" would allow fans to give feedback on what kinds of goals and rewards would most motivate them, give them time to set aside part of their next paycheck for a pledge, and in this case would have warned off Pied Piper that IGG was not going to work for them. I'm convinced that part of the reason that Muv-Luv campaign was so ludicrously successful was that they had a three-month ramp-up between AX and actually launching the Kickstarter, using the time to fine-tune the campaign and build excitement on Prefundia. I'm surprised that the go-to strategy for so many anime/VN/game campaigns is the "big surprise!" Kickstarter, rather than the slow-build. |

The one caveat might be that since this Kickstarter was preceded by a canceled Indiegogo campaign, this Kickstarter might start faster than it would have without the Indiegogo campaign. |

What is interesting is I like to watch anime and foreign language movies subtitled. I like to hear the original voices for the characters and in certain cases if the story is taken place in a non western or English speaking setting the language is part of the story.

As much as shoujo anime (and josei, for that matter) is hard to sell here, there are a few I think were fairly successful here, either from sales or TV ratings. I am specifically talking about "Sailor Moon" and "Cardcaptor Sakura" (I am including in that butchered version called "Cardcaptors").

I started watching Skip Beat! after listening to the podcast. I love the story so far (episode 8). I do agree with Marcos, I also feel the tone of a show is set by the Director/Producers when they choose the Japanese voice actors for the characters. I find the dubs for English releases not matching that original tone, which for me is hard to get past. I would buy the English release, but I would only watch the subtitled version. That is just my preference.
