Depends on which perspective you are looking at. Granting more visa for animators is certainly encouraging news But we do not know much details beside some interviews regarding their treatment and living condition in the new country.

Besides, I am sure many people are aware of Japanese animator's grueling working environment, and their stiff competition when more minor works are outsourced to Korea and China..

Just going to suppress wages even more for animators by increasing supply. I wonder if this will end in some Disney IT like debacle.

Increase the minimum wage to a living wage. 3000 yen per hour in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, 2500 yen in the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe area and 2000 yen elsewhere

If you look carefully at last year's Japan GDP, heavy national debt and negative interest rates, as well as how disasterous both of their macro and micro-economy is, you will figure out the odds of that from happening.

In fact, Abe government just passed the most costly stimulus plan in modern Japan history, apparently raising min. wage isn't the top priority in "Abe Economics"

To be fair the games industry is as bad, some cases even worse, and people still flock to that. I understand that this will not inherently be a good thing, but there doesn't seem to be any downsides.

Man, Abe is aging rapidly. Being at the top of the government is NOT a pleasant job.

So does this mean we might get more collaboration between Masaya Matsuura and Rodney Greenblatt?

Also, the article mentions chefs from other countries...will this work visa system cover them too?

I'm a bit disappointed they didn't see fit to include teachers for their bill. -___-;

I wonder if the relaxing of these visa limitations will encourage more collaborated anime projects with foreign animators...

I respectfully doubt that the Japanese government would lower the wages of Japanese citizens or over-saturate the job market.

Abe views Anime as one of Japan's resources, but the market has took a hit from the economic downturn and now they're concerned of studios moving to other nations for cheaper labor. So he's opening the doors to entice those cheaper workers to come to Japan for "better wages" or welcoming Westerners to "intern" at studios, in hopes of revitalizing the market and bring businesses back. Before it becomes a serious situation like the US is facing right now with Chinese imports.

For the sake of the Japanese people and the Anime industry, I hope it works out for them.

Huh. In that case, I wonder if this'll lead to at least one series helmed by a foreigner with a decidedly non-Japanese flavor, like IGPX.
