Bamboo Dong--
As best as I can recall, the worst thing about SaiKano was the world building. What was the fighting all about?
I rather liked it, actually.

Honestly I really enjoyed both seasons of high school dxd, but I so wish bamboo didn't label It just a boob show like she did. While personally I think it's shelf worthy as it's one of the best ecchi shows I've watched, I would have no problem with it being rental or even perishable since Its a fanservice show. Labeling it a "boob show" feels like the easy way out.

I didn't think it mattered what the fighting was all about. I liked it primarily because I thought "the war" was just an interesting backdrop for the series, and provided the framework for the characters' lives, but didn't define their interactions.
I do remember crying buckets at the end of it. Always sort of tempted to rewatch it, but then I stop myself.

But if you read the review, there's no indication whatsoever that I would've put it into Perishable. I actually enjoyed it and thought it was fun. I chose not to put it in any category, because I think people get really hung up on these labels for reasons that I don't really understand.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but I did read your review. From reading it I would have never thought you would rate it perishable. Mentioning it as possibly perishable was me accepting that some people hate ecchi just because it's ecchi.. To me it seemed like it was either rental or shelfworthy. As you mentioned, because it's an ecchi show people tend to judge it in a more negative light. I was just saying that I would have liked it put into one of the regular slots than be simply labeled a boob show.

@Bamboo I agree with a lot of your points when it comes to the whole fan service thing, of course, I'm sure there are a few differences also, but whatever. I posted some thoughts about fan service in the Senran Kagura review thread if you're interested.
I do agree that certain anime like High School DxD could have the fan service removed and there'd still be a good show left, in this case, a decent shonun battler. On that note, I have heard of and seen the trailer for the third season; what concerns me about this series is if it ends up being one of those "never ending shows" type of series. I'm not a big fan of really long running shows.
As for this new High School DxD season, I have it, but haven't watched it yet. I have put it on muted while I was practicing bass recently and I have to admit; it's pretty funny looking at up a TV while running scale and arpeggio drills when there's all this frivolous nudity with no context. If I recall correctly, there's one scene where Rias just crams her boobs in Issei's face, like I said, with no context; it's pretty funny.
I also saw that spanking scene when I was practicing; I'll have to get on actually watching this relatively soon; during my time off for sure.
As for Cowboy Bebop, I talked a little about this in the other review thread, I have that Amazon version on order and according to the shipping info, it should get here December 26 - January 5. Also, as I mentioned before, and I know I'll probably get ridiculed; in all my years of watching anime, I still haven't gotten around to watching Cowboy Bebop; but I will soon.

I understand where you're coming from. I did sort of cop out. It's hard for me sometimes to rank shows like this into the narrow categories that I invented several years ago (categories that are completely outdated now), as ecchi shows are for such a specific audience. I personally think it's entertaining, but ecchi especially seems to demand that you're already open to this kind of show, versus any other general genre (sports, slice-of-life, etc) that has a lower entry barrier.

I don't know if this will make you feel any better, but I have yet to finish Hana Yori Dango.

I like DxD but I can understand yours and bones2039's point because they're pretty relative. For those amenable to fanservice as you mentioned, it would be shelf worthy, considered not so differently than other shows. For others, it would be an automatic lower rung show or simply not considered for their shelves at all.
It makes me wonder if anyone has a dedicated Boob Shelf though...

I figured, but found it particularly amusing given the character.

I usually find with ecchi content and viewers that people either like it and watch it, are indifferent or don't mind it and will watch it or have a strong dislike for it and either not watch it at all, or maybe the odd series that has it. This is just a general overview as context and execution do matter a lot and people also have different tolerances for ecchi content regardless.
I have heard people say that they don't care how good, thematic or great the characterization is on XYZ show if there's fan service; they simply won't go near it.
I'm reminded of what Theron Martin wrote in his summary for Senran Kagura:
Theron Martin wrote: | + Lots of bouncy boobs and panties (if you're into that sort of thing), improves markedly towards the end.
− Lots of bouncy boobs and panties (if you're not into that sort of thing), annoying characters, takes too long to get to its best content. |
I like how he pretty much expressed that the fan service as both a positive and a negative here, and that's pretty much all anybody can do. Even on his Queen's Blade review, he said that if you have an issue with fan service; stay clear of this show.
The important thing of all this is people being able to respect and empathize with each other.

Have you thought about redoing the categories perhaps? With ecchi shows I think another factor that makes them hard to "rate" is what are you going into it looking for in terms of how to rate it? Are you going into the show looking for the amount of boobs, nipples, asses, panty shots, etc in the show to determine the "quality" rating? Or, like with DxD, are you looking for enough of a plot and story to keep the show afloat without said boobs and butts? Are you looking for any character development? Shuffle for example was very fanservicy but I felt overall had pretty decent character development for a show of its ilk. Many feel the same about Sekerei. I think adequately rating an ecchi show would be difficult and I think what you did here was the best possible way to go about it. Given the current categories anyways.
