I never understood the appeal of video games based directly off of anime. They just retell CliffNote versions of the stories that most people have already seen.

For me, very few games based on anime are worth getting, usually the ones that tell their own stories instead of following the manga/anime's storyline to the T such as the Fullmetal Alchemist games on the PS2 and Transformers by Melbourne House (the latter being the one game actually being better, for the most part, than its anime counterpart.

Depends if the story is even that important a factor, which for most game adaptations of anime isn't the case. I mean, stuff like the DBZ Budokai or the Naruto Clash of Ninja series I'm sure not playing for the story, it's the gameplay that matters.

Not that they have the best gameplay of their genres (DBZ Budokai and Naruto CoN are good, but they're definitely not on the level of Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, etc.), but it adds to the fun somewhat of being able to control the characters from a series you enjoy reading/watching.

It's to relive the matches you loved in the series by playing through them. Plus there is 'what if' story branches that give different stories for if someone else wins that could be added to the game.

Well, whatever suits you. I like the anime games that diverge and tell their own stories. Makes it less predictable.
