It has been a long time since I read Café Occult, but I read and enjoyed both volumes and would have continued reading if the rest had come out.
I have no idea how big my manga "Pile of Shame" is. I tend to buy indiscriminately (anything in Previews that looks interesting) and don't always read as it comes in. This is not helped by my refusal to restart in mid series if it has been more than a few months since I last looked at the earlier part. Warning, Drakuun is not finished in English. Dark Horse published three volumes as graphic novels and published the equivalent of an additional volume in comic book form. Also, this dates from when the graphic novel volumes in English did not always correspond to the Japanese version. The Encyclopedia lists 5 volumes in Japan. How this matches what we got is not clear but it definitely stops in mid story, even if you have the comic book version. If you just want to read Caravan Kidd, PM me, it is possible a loan could be made. Of course I would have to hold your first born as security. |

Your cat story sounds like a manga waiting to be written.

I remember Cafe Occult! Man, bummer that so few volumes came out; I liked that series quite a bit. It felt like it was really starting to build to something before it cut short, and, unfortunately, I don't know enough Spanish or French to finish reading it.

[the blue-green years's japanese title is <mizuiro jidai, "water-coloured era": blue-green is a translation artefact].
I don't want to talk about my pile of shame. I'm too ashamed. |

As for "actual shame", I must have a pretty large threshold because Hot Gimmick is no where near that pile. But Girls Bravo and DearS sure are. And Battle Vixens. And AI love you. And and and.
And I may have gotten a little board with Rumiko Takahashi, and thus have not read much of Rin-ne, but it's unfortunate because given her track record, she has potential to create something that could get fans excited again. Although.... I would rather have Urusei Yatsura picked up by someone who will give it a another chance of course. |

I love Manabe Johji's work. His art style really appeals to me, and his stories are cheeky, fun and often epic. His work does tend towards the pornographic (especially later stuff), but the stories stand on their own.
Outlanders will always stand be #1 for me (and it would have been wonderful to have a full TV series made of it instead of a single OVA). Unfortunately, Drakuun has never had a complete English release (last available compilation is Shadow of the Warlock). It's definitely worthwhile hunting down Caravan Kidd #1 so you can read that series as well. |

I'm so glad you think so lowly of Hot Gimmick as well, Rebecca. It is most definitely the worst manga I have ever actually read in its entirety. It makes me sick to see so many people loving it so much. It was even popular enough for Viz to reprint in the 3 in 1 volumes. It's disheartening to say the least.
My backlog of manga is even worse than my backlog of anime and that's saying something. I need more tiiiiiime... |

LOL Cafe Occult ?! No man, NO.
I read it all and only the cover illustration of the final volume is worth your money -- not to mention it was AXED even in Korea, so why even bother. |

Well, good to know I wasn't the only one who enjoyed Cafe Occult, even if it ultimately turns out not to be worth it. (You may have saved me money, kill-chan.) And that's too bad about Drakuun not being finished...well, I'll read it anyway and use it in the next "Unfinished;" I like Johji Manabe too much to skip it.
Watch out, I may take you up on that when my life is more settled! Though I should warn you, all of my "children" are cats and dogs...
Every animal has a special personality and a weird story here in the Silverman Home for Deranged Animals! I found Horus on vacation in Dorado, Puerto Rico about ten years ago (fun fact: I found my dog on that same vacation), and he has a totally different personality than all of my other cats. He's basically an ego on four legs.
I felt gross when I finished reading it, but I also read it in its entirety. I think the only other title I felt so strongly negative about (and for similar reasons) was Mayu Shinjo's Haou Airen.
I think the Preview Guide sent my brain into hibernation. Sorry about that! |

I guess I'll just have to trust you then. Noir (our little black cat) does not accept the presence of others. Come to think of it the place is not very kid friendly either. It was, however a serious offer. Concerning Drakuun, I have the comics that make up the fourth volume that wasn't printed in graphic novel format. If Outlanders was your first Manabe, be advised that he recycles characters designs and personalities for new titles. He also has characters from prior series make cameos. |

On Gakuen Polizi:
Sadly, it seems like we might have to wait a little longer than that. It's a shame because as much as I thought this first volume was nowhere near as good or interesting as Morinaga's previous works, by the end of it you could feel what she was going for. That first volume was surprisingly light on yuri though, so you'd think that things will heat up in the second (and final) volume, and fast... Anyway, I can't wait to find out how it plays out in the second half, but it appears like that could take a while. |

Yep. I recall just kind staring at the last page when I was done and thinking I need to burn every copy in existence. Why do girls think it's okay to enjoy and aspire to such garbage? And the only thing of Mayu Shinjo's I'm even remotely familiar with is Kaikan Phrase (I even still have VHS fansubs... I need to purge my house of stuff. Oh god.) From what I hear, KP is one of her more tame series. I dunno. Don't really care to find out. Haha~ |

I actually enjoy Rinne, I like Sakura ( I tend to be very picky about female characters) and I didn't really care for Inuyasha (Kagome), so even if it's repetitive and the romance seems to be going nowhere I like it. I do hope that she would make it more linear now though...
As for pile of shame...I buy and read as I go, but manga's i've read and wondered later why the heck I did so cus it was so bad? The only one that comes to mind is Kiss in the Blue. That series was awful (in my opinion). |

Kaho Miyasaka's Kare First Love is probably my favorite pure romance manga ever written. I've always wanted to read some of her other stuff. What makes Kiss in the Blue so bad? |

Why do people think it's okay to enjoy "cozy" murder mysteries where someone's violent death is treated as a fun occasion for a little amateur sleuthing? Why do people think it's okay to enjoy video games where you slaughter hundreds of people? Fiction is fictional; watching bad things happen can be entertaining. Your emotional response doesn't have to be the same as it would be if the same thing were happening in real life. And it particularly annoys me that this kind of hand-wringing is specifically aimed at girls, like having two X chromosomes somehow means you can't tell fantasy from reality. |
