I enjoyed Sherlock Bones as all seven volumes came out here in Finland(titled as Etsiväkoira Sherdock).
But I have to warn potential readers that the manga goes on a seemingly permanent hiatus after volume seven. Abruptly that is, any hanging story threads at that point are left, well, hanging...

I got my final volume of Kazumi Magica in English (I also own all the volumes in Japanese) and the volume was flipped... I'm guessing this was a printing error and I'm the only one? Meaning, I have to turn the manga upside down and open it from the back cover (with the summary) to read it properly.
[EDIT] And I just noticed a double-sided page from the story missing. I compared it to the Japanese manga, so I know it's missing.

That's weird. I don't have my volume to compare yet. Maybe you should notify Yen Press.

Mine was perfectly fine...I'd definitely tell either Yen Press or the company you bought it from. I've had that happen before - I ordered a copy of She Captains by Joan Druett that just reprinted the first half of the book in the second - and the bookstore gave me a new copy.

Oh no! It's unfortunate that Kazumi ended up not being so good in the end. I am obsessed with Madoka so I'm determined to collect all of its manga incarnations, but it's a good heads up to not get too excited and then be let down.

Thanks. I called the store I bought it from and they checked the shelves for another copy. It seems all the copies they received are all upside-down, so they're going to order more and allow me to exchange it. Not that I mind owning a misprint, but I want the book to be readable because I like to share my manga.

Well, to be fair, it's not bad at all. It's got tons of crazy twists at the beginning that come from the author realizing that Madoka wasn't just a cutesy otaku fanservice series when it finally aired, and it drifted into over-the-top dark action/plot twists in the latter half when it finally found its niche, but the conclusion was really nice for me. There were several strands that were rushed through, but the message it had echoed that of Madoka Magica--that everyone's existences and wishes are important, no matter who they are. The series lacks the same kind of uniform and single-strand storytelling that made Madoka Magica so respectable, but it carries on the legacy in its own way and I'd say it's worthy of the Puella Magi name for sure. Of course, it's a spin-off, and I don't think it would be able to hold its own without Madoka Magica's precedence, so... take that as you will. It's no necessary spin-off, but it's not so bad that it needs to be skipped if you carry any interest in reading about a story separate from Madoka's group of friends. At least, I enjoyed it from beginning to end.
If you want to limit your Madoka Magica-inspired spin-off reading to things that might potentially be as great as the show, though, check out The Different Story and the Rebellion manga adaption, both by Hanokage, the guy who wrote/illustrated the original TV series' mediocre manga adaption. In The Different Story and Rebellion, he was given much more freedom and control of his pacing, and his personal storytelling stood out, even in his adaption of Rebellion, which, while it was word-for-word copy-pasted from the film, had spectacular artwork and symbolism inspired by the film itself in his own style and presentation.

Glad I wasnt the only one who thought that the second volume of What did you eat yesterday was light on plot. Does anyone know if future volumes are like this too? Or do they get a it more time with story and character?

I'll take that recipe! (Man I hope you weren't just joking about it. )
I might look into Sherlock Bones. I've been really starved for a mystery manga lately, and the new Kindaichi anime feels more like rubbing salt in the wounds of "what could have been" with the manga. >.>

Just to be "that guy": it's Spider-Man, not Spiderman.
Loved the column! Checked out Sherlock Bones once--it is cute. I mean, the dog reincarnation of Sherlock Holmes is absolutely adorable. In the first volume, he puts on a deerstalker cap and bites on a pipe in one panel. It's kind of a shock that the cutesy premise and art is mixed with grisly murder mysteries. Not my cup of tea. (I've never been big on mystery series).
That pudding cake sounds delicious! I'll take the recipe, too (don't know if I've got the skills to make it, though. Doesn't sound easy).

I'm familiar with a couple of these manga and they are very interesting. For instance,"Monster Musume" is pretty good although at times it gives a little too much information on the girls if you know what I mean. But,it's a fun read anyhow so go out and enjoy it.
The other manga I'm familiar with,"Sherlock Bones" is also interesting. I wonder if the creator of this manga watched "Columbo" when he was younger. I've read enough of the manga to think it might be the case. Mixing in Sherlock Holmes with that old show is a very novel way of doing things.

On Nisekoi, I can understand how Marika could be a hated character. I'm not a fan either, but to me she seems like a character that is meant to be disliked.
I mean, from what I gather, the basis of the character is that she acts nice...because that is how she gets what she wants. Doesn't seem like a character that is meant to get many fans. A manipulative and selfish character, but not to a level where it gets to me.
In the 3 main girls (I consider Tsugumi to be more of a side character, as I don't believe she'll do much but hide behind Chitoge), we have the "light" in Onodera, Chitoge is "light/dark" in her handling of Raku and the whys to how she does things, and we now have the "dark" character in Marika.
I'm sorry to hear the character really rubbed the reviewer the wrong way.
Ruri's (named Rin in the review) actually my favourite character (I'm a Chitoge fanboy when it comes to the harem). I love how she handles Onodera's shyness/unwillingness when it comes to confronting Raku. Along with how she deals with Shu and his idiocy.
Maybe I have a thing for megane characters?

I'm sorry but how in the hell is Monster Monsume is popular I'll have no idea. It is nothing but stupid fetish porn. Aren't you western otaku the same people who said 'enough of the fanservice'? You guys are HYPOCRITIES!

Y'know, I'm not 100% sure, but I think the purpose of this column is to review titles that come out during a given time frame. Monster Musume was released, thus it was reviewed. As an added bonus, it seems to be smarter than the average fanservice manga. So tell me, what exactly is so hypocritical about a reviewer doing their job?
Personally, I'm not big on fanservice, but when I say "enough with the fanservice", it's towards the industry as a whole. Cheesecake and fanservice have their place, and for me to say "enough fanservice!" about a fanservice-y show is like saying "enough action, gawd!" in something like One Piece or Naruto. When I DO say "enough with the fanservice," it's usually because half the shows I watch have unnecessary fanservice, or fanservice is added inappropriately. A more recent example are Megahouse's Utena figures, which, IMO, are faaaar too cutesified/sexified to match the intent of the original show. That is when I start waving my "enough with the fanservice" card.

FYI @ Rebecca
Other than this particular column, none of the other "Right Turn Only" features written by you are available by accessing the archive page. Only the back columns written by Carlo are listed
I wish this would be fixed, since I really enjoy reading your reviews. Any chance of that happening? I feel like I missed one of your columns and can't find where it is.

Oops. As you could probably tell from the column, I'm more a DC girl than a Marvel one. Knew that would bite me someday, and not just in the movie department!
@ Ali07 Ahem, yes, Ruri! I thought I'd fixed that in my final draft. I'm getting as bad as my students... But you're right, she probably is an intentionally difficult character. I'm never fond of the two-faced type in manga (or anywhere, actually), though I'll admit she seemed to provoke a more extreme reaction in me.
@ Snomaster1 I agree, Okayado can get a bit explicit in his character details! On the other hand, it might be worse to leave it up to readers' imaginations...I hadn't thought about a Sherlock Bones/Columbo link, but it does seem very possible. It runs a lot like an old school TV murder mystery show. (I grew up with my mother watching reruns of Columbo, Matlock, and Murder, She Wrote, along with Perry Mason, all the time.)
@TuxedoCat I noticed that too. I'm not sure what's going on...I'll ask someone.
And now, the recipe! It's easier than it sounds:
Ingredients:
3/4 cup sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
pinch salt (I usually use Kosher)
1 cup milk
1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, melted and cooled
1 cup maple syrup
1 tsp vanilla extract
12 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
Cake:
Preheat oven to 350
In a bowl, combine dry ingredients (6 tbsp of the cocoa powder) and mix well. Whisk in the milk and half the butter. Pour (or scrape, it will be a stiff batter) into a buttered/greased 2 quart baking dish.
Sauce:
Slowly stir remaining cocoa into syrup. Bring syrup to a boil in a saucepan. When boiling, remove from heat and stir in remaining butter and vanilla. Pour over cake batter and bake 35-45 minutes. Will be puffy and sort of a bubbling golden brown. The sauce will form a "pudding" on the bottom; make sure to put it on the plate with that part on top.
Vanilla Cream:
Amounts of ingredients will vary. To heavy cream or whipping cream (anywhere from a pint to a quart) add between 1 and 3 tablespoons of sugar and between 1 and 3 teaspoons of vanilla extract. This totally depends on how sweet/strong you want the cream to taste; I usually use 1 1/2 of sugar and 2 of vanilla. Whip to desired consistency, preferably something fairly soft that still holds its form. Top hot pudding cake with cream, eat immediately.
You can also make this without the cocoa, which is also delicious.
