Interesting. Nice to see the market for physical releases is increasing. I'd be very curious to see what the numbers for the North American market are.

Let's hear the "anime is dying" and "without the US industry, the Japan anime industry is collapsing" people now.

2013's haven't been released yet, but here's the anime home video market from 2002-2012 as compiled by the Japanese External Trade Organization. Source is included in the image. |

So Blu-Ray's almost entirely an otaku format. That's unexpected.

Why do you say that? The only number that I see for Blu-ray is the sales being up 24.1%. There is nothing about what was on the discs or who bought them. Did I miss something? |

@ ultimatemegax & rederoin: thanks for those additional figures.
What I'd really love to know is where the growth in the Japanese domestic market is coming from. Are these increased sales coming from already wildly popular properties like One Piece and Ghibli movies or are we seeing an increase in the sales of the "late night" anime? Or perhaps both? eta: oops, rederoin's post disappeared. |

It's very nice to see that the anime industry is flourishing, let's hope it grows in 2014 as well !

You can see this phenomenon if you look at sales for shoujo/josei series versus shounen/seinen ones. The series with larger female audiences also tend to have a higher proportion of DVD to BD sales. Using two shows taken from the 2012 sales data show the pattern. Hakuouki Reimeiroku, one of a series based on an otome game for girls, averaged about 3,800 copies on DVD and only 1,350 on Blu-ray. The most recent installment of the seinen series Hidamari Sketch, "Honeycomb," sold about 1,100 DVDs per volume but over 6,200 BDs. Without an analysis by title it's really hard to know what to make of the sales figures cited in this story. Attack on Titan alone averaged over 16,000 DVDs and 35,000 BDs per volume. At about $50-60/volume, the eight Blu-ray volumes released in 2013 brought in nearly $15 million. Evangelion 3.33 generated over 175,000 DVD and 400,000 BD sales. For now, this is good. But my concern as of now, how is the anime video sales is going to look like after Japan raises it sale tax to 8% this year and 10% in 2015 according to Wall Street Journal as part of Abenomic, which I'm a big critic of. According to a survey done by Kyodo News in Japan, it looks like 70% of Japanese consumers are considering curbing their spending when sales tax increases in April from the current 5% to 8% which could include anime products (which mean DVDs could be effected too).
I mean anime DVDs are really expensive and overpriced enough in Japan, raising the tax is going to make it harder for people in Japan to buy the DVDs (and other merchandise, well at least Bandai is doing something about that). Also even before the tax hikes was implemented, there was a rise in sale prices according to BBC. I wouldn't be surprised if a year later, ANN report that Anime video sales drop significantly due to the tax hike done by Abenomics. But for now, enjoy the good new while it last. |

Does Videoscan track Internet sales, such as Right Stuf and Amazon.com? |

Even if it is late night anime, is this a general increase, or is it driven by a few hits like AoT? If the latter, it could be a temporary blip based upon one good year. |

Yes, I missread something. Its too early for me, the coffee still needed to kick in. Just pretend you never saw it.
If 2014 is worse than 2013, I doubt its related to the tax hike. We already got a very weak Autumn 2013 and Winter 2014. Those 2 seasons will have a big negative affect on 2014's sales. And the tax hike has nothing to do with that. Unless we get an amazing summer and spring season in terms of sales, or a increase in sales of mainstream movies/shows, 2014 will be worse than 2013. I suspect that spring of 2014 will probably be massive in terms of sales. Some of the biggest hits in different mediums are getting adaptations(for both fujoshi and otaku audiences),it's hard for me to see it being as underwhelming as winter season was. |

It'll be big, Since JoJo and Love Live will reach 10k, and will probably both reach 20k. And a lot other popular shows that could reach at-least 10k. However, 2013 had a strong Autumn 2012 season, Winter 2013 had Love Live!, Spring 2013 had a bunch of 10k+ sellers and SnK, and Summer 2013 had Free!, Symphogear and Monogatari S2(although that one will also heavilly contribute to 2014). 2014 however, has a weak Autumn 2013 season(We migth not even get a 20k seller for that season), and a very, very, very weak winter 2014 season. It will be the first season without a 10k+ seller in long while. Unless Hoozuki saves us. But the v2 drop makes it look grim. But I doubt the Spring season and Kancolle can save this year. |
