You would think that you would hear a little bit more about the Yakuza in anime. I mean we have a fair number of mob flicks in the states, it seems like at least one a year.

Here's an OVA on this column I haven't yet seen, much less heard of, I'll go rectify that now. Though, I think Yakuza appear more in anime than one would think, but usually as a attache to some ojou-sama for a comedy series.

I checked CD Japan and Amazon Japan. Catalog number DSTD-6779
The DVD seems to still be available but not indicated as subtitled. It seems there was also a live action version. For other yakuza stories the gag manga Shizukanaru Don (The Quiet Don), available through ZQ Books for the iPad, also has anime and live action adaptations. The two very cheesy movies are also available via iTunes in the U.S. |

I remember Kaze no Yojimbo was a good anime with yakuza in it.
Also, would some of the characters in Samurai Champloo count as yakuza? |

IIRC Jake Adelstein wrote that yakuza have their fingers in enough media conglomerates that you as another media corporation don't want to trash-talk them - they'll blacklist you (block your access to their talent and products). So media depictions are rare and generally toothless, even positive (e.g. stuff Gokusen and Nisekoi); even in bloodbath shows like Black Lagoon you don't see much of their dark side. |

This plot kind of reminds me of All Dogs Go to Heaven, actually.

The Yakuza's biggest threats are outsiders. They can continue their business because their influence is pretty limited to domestic affairs, but they tend to avoid foreigners because they're afraid of involving foreigners in anything that might put the world's eyes on them and disrupt their business. Definitely made me interested in this OVA, though... |

There is a Yakuza family in both Gokusen and Black Lagoon.
(Two different ones on fact). Last edited by R.G. on Wed Nov 27, 2013 3:43 am; edited 1 time in total |

Different audiences. Yakuza films have been typically fodder for older Japanese men, and it's just not an audience that has typically been a target of anime. It's the same reason why there's few instances of serious Chambara anime, and why something like Lone wolf and Cub was made into live-action instead of anime, for example. |

They need something like The Godfather that was watched by everybody. |

They already do. It's called Battles Without Honor and Humanity.

There have been a number of Hollywood films that have made the Yakuza as villains. To me,that's an appropriate role for them in a movie. They're just as bad as the Mafia in America. I even read somewhere that they're operating in the United States. They operate out of the Asian immigrant communities that are here in this country.
I don't like them as much as I don't like the Mafia. They're a bunch of scum-sucking criminals who do the most disgusting things. They're reprehensible and every single last one of them deserves to be in jail. |
