Oooo, actual prison setting? Or a mere symbol representing how someone is trapped in some position and can't go anywhere due to economic downturn. Can't wait regardless!

They're school chairs, so I think anyone believing this is actually not going to be high school will be disappointed. High school is a staple of the series, it wouldn't be Persona without it.
I think its more likely they are stuck in the school and aren't able to escape for whatever reason.

I hope not, sounds too much like Danganronpa.

Did people forget that Eternal Punishment is part of the Persona series and not all about high school? Or that this series has 4 main games and only two play like each other. I don't think it's beholden to one type of style.
I do wish we would get another Persona like 2, but I guess that's not in vogue. Don't get me wrong, the school stuff is fine and obviously a huge part of the series, but I think it could be fine without it.
Either way, not much to go off this preview. Which is a shame, because we've been waiting all this time and we basically got nothing. Still, it seemed a bit creepier and thats good. I'd like the more dark and morbid aspects of Persona, something 4 did'nt touch.

Well, I think after the major successes of Persona 3 and 4, Atlus would be absolutely insane to go away from what works. Maybe they will try something different, but I'd be shocked if this isn't still high school with waifus and pop music and such. Story could still be darker, but those elements will still need to be there to appeal to the new generation of Persona fans they've gotten.

Waifus?
Is that really why people play Persona? So they can date anime girls?
Something tells me it's more than that. It has to be the great jrpg gameplay and not just the visual novel stuff. Because if not, why don't more people play visual novels?
Well whatever. Hopefully, this makes them money so the atlus that strays from the norm and makes dark games has a chance. I really would like another Digital Devil saga.

Its a glorified dating sim game (You can get all the girls to confess their love for you, after all), so of course waifus are a big part of it. The old games had a terrible art style and none of the dating sim stuff, which really sucked.

Its not the only thing, its just one of the driving forces. I mean hell, on /v/ anytime you have a Persona topic it normally turns into people debating who the best girl is.

But it's not.
You can have social links with many people and in a way they are just a more thought out demon negation system. Instead of talking with demons and getting new Personas they thought it would be better to have this character story development system that would make better use of the high school setting. The girls dating thing is more of a byproduct, but they take up such a small aspect of the game, that calling it a glorified dating sim is pretty insane. I mean there's really nothing even to the "dating".
On top of that, these games are just building off Nocturne's mechanics to great effect. P3/P4 have awesome well thought out rpg mechanics. They are no slouch in the gameplay department so lets not undermine this thing that takes up most of the game.

Maybe for you and others, but I'm not sure that makes up everyone.

What? No. I mean Persona 2 has the same character artist doing the in-game art, but Kaneko's art is still great and distinct. They fit those games, especially two.

So? They were good jrpgs.

you're both, right?
it's the hybrid of amazing, inventive rpg mechanics + monster collecting + anime/dating sim/ high school life simulation..

Exactly. The RPG and gameplay stuff are good too, but if it was only that, and no high school/dating sim part, it would only be a good game. The dating sim stuff is what separates Persona from the pack and makes it a truly great RPG. They work in unison to make one of the best JRPG experiences out there.

As far as initial releases go, the first Persona game actually sold the best in Japan. Atlus obviously had no qualms changing things up as time went on.

Maybe this time the main characters are slaves to their powers and have to save the day to earn freedom.

I agree. While the Persona games are pretty solid JRPG's on their own (and certainly hard enough to give a good challenge), the Social Link integration is part of what makes them so fun and it certainly helped to make much of the dungeon crawling less tedious, along with adding the self-imposed challenge of actually completing all of the links as something extra to do(never pulled it off in either p3 or p4 sadly). I certainly wouldn't mind the setting being changed up a bit or the storylines themselves returning to darker roots but they definently shouldn't get rid of that gameplay aspect since it's done much more good than harm for the franchise.
Now onto bigger questions...wonder what kind of mythology they'll pull from this time. I think they might go with Hinduism though I expect to be wrong.
