I'm going to talk a little about fansubs, hope it's OK for this forum.

OK, this show, most likely will never get released in the US, and will also probably never be fansubed. Just like sport anime does not do well in the R1, it's not that popular in the fansub crowd either. Zac and Justin already went into some details as to why that might be. And, just like in the industry, the download numbers would be very small. They are small enough for an old 80's show, let alone an old 80's sports show. Plus, 72 episodes is a gigantic work load for subbers.

Hold on, a show... where the kid has both of his parents?! Preposterous! How can such a thing exist?!

That's too bad about the availability...the show sounds like something I would really enjoy. Thanks for the review and I'll be back for the next one!

This is one of those shows where you wish that you had a wining lottery ticket and as a consequence more money than sense in order to pay for bringing it over.

For the record, it is still legally available in Taiwan, R3TW (NTSC) with traditional Chinese sub.

The 18-DVD individually boxed (6 each in 3 artboxes) edition is very difficult to find, although it is still available for auction. A highly compressed 5-DVD edition (in two boxes) was repackaged by Gull, a company known for re-release oldies at budget price.

Truth be told, I'm starting to think that 'Pile of Shame' is a really awful title for this series of columns. I read the introduction, so yes, I know what it's meant to mean, but nevertheless when it popped up in my RSS feed I thought 'ooh I get to read Justin ripping on some crappy old sports anime!' When he intended the opposite...

I don't mean to troll, but I feel like this column has a misleading title. While I love the fact that older anime is being showcased, all of this stuff isn't available in the U.S. and pretty obscure. For something to be the equivalent to a "Pile of Shame", it would have to be someone never having seen things like Ghost in the Shell or any Ghibli film for that matter.

Oh man, I'm now dreaming of someday happening upon Musahi no Ken on Japanese laserdiscs or VHS tapes... it definitely looks like a pretty excellent series!

I know this column isn't based around reader-requests, but any chance there might be a feature on Blue Sonnet at some point? It's one of my favorite "terrible 80s/90s OVAs that everyone's forgotten about" and I'd be really curious as to what Justin thinks about it.

It's Justin's column. Whether or not seeing a show yet makes him feel "ashamed" is his right to decide, no matter what that show is.

The purpose of this column isn't just "Let's talk about old/obscurer anime", it's literally, "Justin talks about stuff he's wanted to see for a long time (or didn't know he wanted to see) but hasn't had a chance to yet"

It's on the pile. I'm waiting to see if I can get my hands on the obscure MangaUK dub first. Getting Mike Toole's help with that, but these things take us a while, as we're both busy guys, and those tapes next to never pop up on the used market.

FWIW, the next couple columns will be on shows that turned out to be giant pieces of crap...

Yes, but not FANsubed. There are R3 rips available, and they are English, sort of.

YES! I love it when you rip into horrible things. I don't know why, it's just far more amusing when you're talking about bad stuff. Evil or Very Mad

I have to admit that sports anime, especially older ones, are the most likely series I'd skip and not look back. There are a few requisits that I'll view for their impact and importance, like Aim for the Ace (1979) and perhaps some of Ashita no Joe or Touch, but beyond that, I can never see myself wading through multiple tens of episodes of low budget sports and drama. Maybe if they get BD boxsets, or have compilation OVAs or films, or reimagings in film form like Aim for the Ace.

As for fansubs, I'm seeing that ARR did all 72 episodes. Those guys are pretty diligent at getting older anime in all formats out in raw or subbed format, stuff that's highly obscure of forgotten. I'm sure their efforts are far better than how I had to watch Ginga Sengoku Gunyuuden Rai, which was the straight awful Chinese bootlegs. What a shame for an epic show from Jouji Manabe. I guess only the Japanese and Middle Easterners know about it.

There sure were a lot of ESPer series back then. I watched that OVA not too long ago, and reminds me of Cosmo Police Justy with a genderswap and put back in school.

I hope you do get some off-shot single episode OVAs in this column, those are always fun to pick apart but see where they fall in anime's history. I think they're some of the best avenue's anime can take for creativity, just get an idea and make it quickly. Sometimes you get Dog Soldier, sometimes a Good Morning Althea.
