Sounds like a good way to dispose of your old crap and get more out it than GameStop would offer. And oh yeah, the news media is completely blameless.

I actually thought of the same thing. I doubt they have any idea the value of the games so you could bring some older "Violent" game that Gamestop would give you like a buck for and get a 10 dollar gift card.

"Susan Saucier, director of community services, said, "We're not saying the use of video games causes people to become murderers, but there's evidence that it causes increases in aggressiveness, fear, anxiety and desensitization about actions of violence."

Really?I'd like to see that evidence cause i'v heard otherwise.there are
ALOT of kids below the age of 17 that play games like COD,GTA,and the parents let them play these games.i know parents can only do so much, but watching what they play is one of the things parents should do.they don't wanna blame themselves so they aim their anger video games and movies.

Yep indeed, we've seen parents blaming other thing other then themselves even before video game existed.

They're just looking for something to blame. Because there is no way they can burn murderous sociopaths for the crimes they commit.

A criminal is a criminal regardless. If someone commits a crime, they are alone responsible for their actions. Why is this such a hard concept for people to understand?

Banning something is never the answer. If your first course of action in a situation is to ban the continuation of something, then you're automatically wrong. Why is it the "source" of someone's actions that are to blame? Why not the person who, you know, actually committed the crime?

And don't take that the wrong way... it's a completely ludicrous idea to think that games and any other such outside "influence" can cause people to turn into murderous zombies....

Well, you know, Call of Duty is more popular than Jesus now.

Funny you should claim causation, Susan, because I've played, watched and read my fair share of violent media in my 26 years and I remain a remarkably non-violent, non-aggressive person. Pretty mouse-like, actually.

I just find it odd that they didn't mention Call of Duty as an example, just like how the NRA didn't say Call of Duty. But that doesn't matter, just another history repeating itself of burning media that "they don't understand." Just makes me sad that there isn't enough push for mental health.

Fiction/entertainment reflects reality. Have a violent society? You'll have violent media. It's not the other way around.

Burn all the DVDs and games you want, folks. It might make you feel better in the moment, but it's not going to make society any less bloodthirsty.

By the way, burning what you don't like? Pretty violent.

So much for rational discourse. Do they want to ban alcohol and caffeine, too? After all, booze strips away inhibitions and caffeine withdrawal can be a real bitch.

@penguintruth

Good point. Instead of burning or dumping, why not have a better type of trade instead of gift card stuff. Trade violent stuff for more age-appropriate stuff depending on who comes. Kids get more of the Pixar, Nintendo, etc and slightly older kiddos can have more PG-13 or Teen rated stuff. Can take the discs to libraries or activity centers for older people.

Don't ban semi-automatics; don't ban wars..................

Combining alcohol and caffeine makes feckless behaviour more likely:

Education is the answer, not the heavy-handed implement of fascist censorship.

@Mikeski - parents shouldn't be able to "confiscate" games purchased by or for their children. Paternalism has no place in modern society.

And for those of you who feel the need to blow off some steam at the "moral" police:

http://www.newgrounds.com/collection/pennybain

Quote:
On April 01, 2001 a debate opened up on DigitalDesk.com about violent online games. Of course Newgrounds was singled out, and an expert in the field of violence in the media was called in. Her name is Penny Bain. Here is what Penny Bain had to say to DigitalDesk.com about Newgrounds:

"I was appalled when I looked at Newgrounds," Penny told us, "because, obviously, there's a number of gamers, amateur gamers out there that have posted their material and they're encouraging people to come on to this site and shoot their favorite celebrity. It's just amazing that this is acceptable."

-Penny Bain
Executive Director
BC Institute Against Family Violence

Of course, Newgrounds fans responded with their own special brand of critisizm - games where you beat up and kill Penny Bain. No actual harm is intended towards Miss Bain. We wish her the best of health, despite her ignorant and oversimplified views on society.

Good thing this is a completely voluntary trade-in run by private citizens, then, eh?
