There was happy about Tales of, and then there was us.
Bamco's facebook page had hundreds of comments from fans who were just plain ecstatic. Being one of them, I would know.
I just pray that we get Xillia, and just MAYBE Vesperia's PS3 port.
I'd say to anyone who hasn't played a Tales of game, what is wrong with you?! Go out there and get Tales of Symphonia, Tales of the Abyss, or Tales of Vesperia. Or even Tales of Graces F when it's released. Some of the best JRPG's I've played.
That being said, Dragon Quest is really fun too. I was a skeptic at first, but now I'm an addict.

Aww, no comments on Gust's Atelier series? I heard that helped step foot in popularizing item crafting in J-RPGs nowadays.

Where's the Gensou Suikoden games on that list?
I mean Konami has made the effort to bring most of the games in that franchise to the U.S. so I would assume there should be a big enough to have made that list if you're putting Lunar and Sakura Taisen/Wars on it.

Just pointing out, Taskmaster was listed twice here.
Truth be told, while I'm interested to play MvC3, I'm very saddened by the roster. Some of the best characters from MvC2 are gone are probably won't be added. And really, what give with no MegaMan of any kind, but other characters from the MegaMan series pop up.[/quote]

Enjoyed reading the "J-RPG Status Check" feature, Todd. It was really interesting. (I can't believe there are that many FF games. Egad. You actually lost count? Yeowzar. Though, can't say I blame you.)
I was wondering why the Suikoden series wasn't included as well? I own all five main games, plus Tactics. The series had a couple spin off games for hand-held systems too, I think.

I enjoyed this weeks Status Check feature. Since it seems some series were missing, perhaps a part 2 is in order?
On the topic of the Shin Megami games (and their spin offs) I just played the Catherine demo and it was great! I really can't believe that Atlus hasn't announced it yet. A lot of the in-game art is already in english from what I've seen (though a few things would be just fine with subtitles) so that just leaves the normal in-game text and dialogue. Personally I'd be fine if it doesn't get a dub to get it out faster, but I'm sure that would hurt sales. The least they could do is announce it, even if they don't have a release data yet.

You forgot Infinite Space, Todd.

I nominate SRW and Fire Emblem. Breath of Fire too, but I guess we all know that series is dead, dead, dead.
Also, has there been any talk about more Tales coming to X360? I haven't really been keeping up.

Did we forget to list next week's Neptunia release or were we just trying to block it from memory? I actually pre-ordered that one...

I'm thinking of getting the crazy awesome special edition of Tactics Ogre later in the month. I've never played the game before, but all the hype it's gotten on this column has convinced me to try it.
(If anyone else in the UK or Ireland is interested, you can pre-order it for only 25/30 pounds/euro on Amazon, with free shipping.)

Agreed, there's a lot more to the Suikoden games than some of those.
Suikoden I (PS1/PSN)
Suikoden II (PS1)
SuikoGaiden I (PS1)
SuikoGaiden II (PS1)
Suikoden Card Stories (GBA)
Suikoden III (PS2)
Suikoden IV (PS2)
Rhapsodia / Suikoden Tactics (PS2)
Suikoden V (PS2)
Suikoden I & II (PSP)
Suikoden Tierkreis (DS)
That's 10 titles plus a rerelease. And we're only missing 3 (and the rerelease) in the US.
Also, Star Ocean has 4 games and two remakes, and wasn't on the list. Nor was, surprisingly enough, Kingdom Hearts (6 games + 5 remakes), unless it was counted in with the Final Fantasy games?

I'm glad that this shortly in, there's already fans of Suikoden to be found. The 2000s were a decade where Final Fantasy was on the wane (at least to me), and the Suikoden series that I discovered then picked up that slack in a great way, becoming my favorite RPG series.
It's been quiet on the Suiko-front since Tierkreis, despite some rumors that series creator Murayama might be coming to Konami to work on Suikoden VI. I'd be glad if they were just taking their time to make sure they did a good job, but in this case, I don't think "no news is good news." Still, I'll always hold out hope!
As for Tactics Ogre, knowing that it's a Matsuno game and has an Alexander Smith localization, I really, really want to play it, but alas, no PSP. Maybe I can borrow one in the future and bask in the glory of isometric sprites with political ambitions.

Loved the JRPG check. I was really into Final Fantasy in middle and high school (and it's what led me into anime), though I've kind of grown out of the series. I still played XIII, but I haven't bothered to keep up with all the sequels and MMO versions. It seems like Shin Megami Tensei is getting more and more popular; I keep seeing more cosplayers at cons both in the States and Japan, and the fandom seems very alive online.
Is Star Ocean really dead? The Last Hope just came out a couple years ago, so I didn't think Squeenix had called it quits on it.
I always wonder what it would have been like if Xenosaga had been more successful. The second game had its faults, but the third was pretty good, and the first remains my favorite game on PS2. Oh well, at least I managed to find a copy of the DS remake of the first two games for cheap.
Adding to the "I can't believe you didn't mention this series!": Wild Arms. Never a huge franchise, but there are a fair numbers of games if you include all the recent remakes and ports.

So many RPGs mentioned and yet a few were still missed. The Atelier series and Arc Tornelico has brought up a good cult fanbase over the past few years thanks to NIS America. I just wish when I was playing Mana Khemia that my memory disc decide to flake out and erase all the data while I was playing the game =/
No mention of the World of Mana series, but since there hasn't been a game since 2007 after Heros of Mana I think Sqaure just put the series to the side and forgot about it. The series was OK, but nothing spectacular.
There is also the Summon Night series, which I last heard in Siliconera the company who did the game went out of business so who knows if anybody will pick the series back up.
As for Dragon Quest I've only come across it in the past few years with XIII and IX and this series is now growing on me. I look forward to X when it comes out, not sure when I'll get the time to play the earlier titles.
The FF series is a good series, but at this point I don't think Square knows what to do with the series. The great cinematic and graphics are nice, but that alone won't cut it. The battle system, story, and character development is also key. III-VI are definitely great games (I still need to play the first two). VII is good but overrated. I love IX and it's underrated. VIII is...different. I like X for the gameplay but the story wasn't my favorite in the series. XII has it's ups and down.
There is also the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicle series. Not sure to why "Final Fantasy" is even in the title the only relation being in game terminology. I loved the first one even though it gets repetitive. Ring of Fates was a disappointment, Echos of Time is good, and didn't get interest in Crystal Bearer's. What I need to do is get the two Wiiware games.
The Tales series is my favorite series. The stories, the characters, the gameplay, the skits, the anime style, I love everything about it. Looking forward to Tales of Graces F. This is definitely an underrated series and needs more love!!!

Not a word about a 360 release. But then again we don't even know for sure what platform Graces F will be on, though many assume it's going to be on the PS3.
