That's very, very impressive. I was aware that an API had been developed for access to the Kinect's colour and depth sensing cameras, but I didn't know it's skeletal mapping had been reverse engineered yet.

No need.
Few people in Japan will actually buy it for gaming I imagine. |

I have two responses:
1. That is really, really cool. 2. I now understand the difficulty girls face when they wear mini-skirts. |

It's funny to watch Miku move like a man in that demo vid of it. Still... somehow I find myself excited for this thing even if we'll never get it here.

This could lead to some really really weird ecchi Miku motion caps in the near future.......
Mini-skirts don't move so freely that way. |

He also releases an english version btw The Kinect feature is really very cool.. although people have already gotten superb results with manual choreography in mmd: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2InaS133UOg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7934elDPjbI And to be frank I think most people will still get better results that way for complex motions (i.e. dancing) unless the person is also very good in real life of course. You could probably combine live capture and manual tweaking though |

Oh my, now that looks like a relatively easy setup and affordable motion capture. I love the potential application for something like this in independent production or something.

It's pretty impressive how accurate and smooth the 3D model follows the movements. Good mocap system indeed.

Wow, the Kinect may not completely bomb in Japan.
Miku comes to the rescue for anybody, even Microsoft! |

I have to say, it's interesting to see the Kinect's true potential is actually outside the world of gaming, not in it.
This is now the 4th video where I've seen the Kinect being used for applications having nothing to do with gaming, and each has been pretty stellar. I can add this to the list, as the videos were certainly entertaining (and could be a lead-in for future anime?). My favorite still has to be the "Minority Report"-like application control. I can see Microsoft re-evaluating the Kinect as a PC input device, rather than a console add-on. They'd make a substantial amount of money once applications are developed for it. *sometime in the future... "For a limited time only, each Dell purchased will come with a free upgrade to Microsoft's Virt-UI (formerly known as Kinect) pointing device on selected models. Hurry now! Operators are standing by." |
