While I was posting about this in the Bakemonogatari thread, this news item was posted. Oh well. The DVDs sold 21,000 in the first week, so 72K total for the first week. If it sells at about the same rate as previous volumes it should wind up in the mid 80s.

Funny thing is most of the comments in the Japanese blog about DVD sales are about K-ON!! having 'passed away'. Big drop off in sales from the first season.

Guess I'll have to see the "big drop" when ANN has the top 10 BluRay list thing. Unless you already have a nice list from credible source of course.

I would have thought that putting 3 episodes per BD with an MSRP of 8400 yen (Amazon selling for 6160 yen) would help keep the numbers more or less on track with the first season. Cause it's a lot cheaper per episode than Bakemonogatari with 2 episodes at MSRP 7350 yen (Amazon selling for 5390 yen)

Its the difference in quality you silly. Your calculation doesn't include the actual quality of the show and how wide of an audience it can grab.

About the K-ON!! news... well drop in sales always happens with sequels, but then again, this second season has even less direction than first one.

Well, considering that I'm not a fan of Bakemono other than the Suruga Monkey arc, I'm not the person you should be telling about Bakemono's "quality".

Unless it's the QUALITY animation of TV episode 10.

I don't need to disagree with you. Sales disagree with you.

Thats a hit below the belt. BluRay fixes all of that.

And by quality I mean story and superior directing and execution as well as outstanding action scenes (even though some were MIA during TV run).

Because sales are always positively correlated to quality!

That's why Twilight is the highest quality book ever written!

Blu-ray numbers for the week aren't out yet, except for Bakemonogatari, and that's only because it's record setting. And when they do come out the official BD sales rankings don't generally give actual numbers, only rankings, unlike DVD numbers+ranking. Are you implying Kyou mo Yarareyaku isn't reputable? Because I doubt you'll find any instances of sales numbers posted there that didn't match up to official sales numbers posted later.

While the DVD sales of K-On!! are low compared to the first season's, I'm sure the BD sales will be much higher. K-On is mostly buyed by otakus, who want to enjoy their moe in glorious quality (it's better to fap to 1080p than 480p after all).

I'd be happy if that weren't the case though. I liked the first season, but this second is just a cow-milking. They doesn't even follow the manga which actually has a plot.

What do you expect after the huge sales the first season got? KyoAni is known for sticking with something they know will bring them money, so milking K-On! for all it's worth was to be expected. KyoAni will still profit from the second season, just maybe not as much as the first. There are more BD/DVDs to sell for the second season, but then that also costs more to produce, and with lower sale numbers, it could even out, or might even result in a loss, but I doubt it.

As for Bakemono, I wouldn't mind Shaft to do a second season of it, as long as there's still material in the novels to adapt. I want more Senjougahara. Laughing Shaft is already known for extending popular series (Zetsubou Sensei, Hidamari) anyway.

Oh, I don't think there's any chance K-ON!! will just break even. It might not be as big a hit as the first season, but I expect it'll still easily sell 20,000+ copies combined BD/DVD sales per volume.

Well, the K-ON!! BD is ranked #14 on Amazon.co.jp rankings and the Bakemono BD is ranked #21, but I have no clue how often such rankings fluctuate. I highly doubt the numbers of K-ON!! will get even close to those of Bakemono's, but I really don't think the sales have "passed away"

And under just "TV anime" K-ON!! vol 2 and 1 are #1 and 2 respectively. link

No, statistically, the Holy Bible is. I wonder when they will animate that.
