If I'm understanding it right, this Shonen Jump Next will be where new authors get to shine and, if it's well received, maybe get a serial?
I though they already did this in some capacity? Was it that they just never had a magazine devoted to it before?

There have been several similar spinoff magazines for one-shot stories over the years — most notably Aka-maru Jump. Shonen Jump Next is the title of the latest relaunch.

That's funny because I thought something like "boys in shirts" would be in some shoujo magazine targeted at girls, not in shounen jump (of all things).

WAaI! boys in skirts is a new magazine by a separate publisher, not a new manga in Shounen Jump.

Quote: | The May issue of Shueisha's Jump Square magazine announced on April 3 that an another spinoff magazine called Jump SQ.19 (pronounced "Jump S Q Ichi Kyū") will launch on May 19. The first issue will contain one-shot manga such as Mizuki Kawashita's G-Maru Edition, Usamaru Furuya's Teiichi no Kuni, the return of Yasuhiro Nightow's Kekkai Sensen, and Kentaro Yabuki's adaptation of Tomohiro Matsu and Peco's Mayoi Neko Overrun! light novel series. |
Does anyone consider this weird since Mizuki Kawashita has published most of her previous series in Shonen Jump?

I'm curious, I agree who is the target audience? I will definitely check out "boys with skirts" at Kinokuniya this month (next month?). I wonder if Akadot will carry it?

No, not particularly. Both magazines are shounen magazines published by Shueisha. Kentaro Yabuki (mentioned in this news item) has had work published in Shounen Jump as well (Black Cat and To-Love-Ru).

I'd say "how-to tips on women's clothings" is a pretty sure giveaway.

I have to say that this is very interesting that Shonen Jump Japan is doing this, I hope that Viz here in the U.S. manages to get the rights to publish an English version of Shonen Jump Next.

Oh okay, so it is the same thing, just under a new name. Thanks.
