Without any sponsors Fuji TV might as well have negative numbers.

I recently posted a project I've been working on, analyzing the data from these charts all the way back to when ANN first started posting them in 2007. If you're interested, give it a look here; I'd love to hear any feedback on how I can improve it further. And maybe why I was having some problems with server errors, like when I tried to scrape links from the news archives by year.

Downloading web pages within ANN's 60/minute limit is the notebook's one big performance bottleneck, though I suppose it could be improved a lot by using data scraped in previous runs. Would it be appropriate to upload a CSV with the dataset to Kaggle or somewhere?

(Also, still hoping someone has an answer to my question from last week.)

...and I noticed something: In all the rankings ANN's posted since they started in 2007, not once has an independent station like Tokyo MX made the chart. Every single row, out of over 9,000 altogether*, has been from one of the seven network stations in Kanto. Which got me wondering: How does Video Research count broadcasts on independent stations?

As you have said, if someone skims the Video Research company's weekly Kantō-region rating charts, probably he will find that TV stations/TV networks which are mentioned in the charts are limited to NHK General TV, NHK E-Tele, Nippon TV, TBS, Fuji TV, TV Asahi, and TV Tokyo.
The Video Research company categorises independent TV stations as the 'others' and bundles them together, and ratings which shows of indie stations have earned are not included in those rating charts, and usually, Video Research does not make ratings that shows of independent stations have earned public.
However, the Video Research company does conduct research also on ratings which programmes of independent TV stations get, and Video Research has data about them.
For example, Sun Television is the independent TV station in Hyōgo Prefecture, and the Hanshin Tigers professional baseball team is based in Nishinomiya, Hyōgo Prefecture. The Hanshin Tigers won the championship of the Central League in 2023, and Sun Television broadcast that baseball game in which the Tigers won the championship of the Central League. Since Sun TV's broadcast of the baseball game in question earned a high audience rating (and also since many baseball fans, especially fans of the Tigers in the Kansai region, were interested in the ball game in question very much), the Video Research company made the rating which Sun TV's broadcast of the baseball game got public, and Japanese newspapers reported it. Probably this is an uncommon example of Video Research's having made a rating that a show of an independent station public.

Huh. Do you know where I can look to read more on this? Or at least have a link I can cite? English would be ideal, but I'll take Japanese.

If they actually exclude independent stations by policy, that seems like a serious shortcoming, certainly in measuring live anime viewership today. I can definitely believe Video Research is behind the times, mind you; some Googling brought up a 2014 study arguing that they had unique methodology flaws and conflicts of interest that meant pay TV viewership was being systematically undermeasured in Japan. (Of course, it's from CASBAA, so they're not exactly unbiased.)

I read it on the Video Research website some years ago. I also read it in an article about broadcasting in a Japanese magazine some years ago.
The Japanese Wikipedia article on ratings has a few lines about this matter, and the source of that part is a page on the Video Research website. So the piece of text I read about the matter on the Video Research website might have been it.

Thanks. Lessee…

CSデジタル放送・ケーブルテレビ・地上波独立局などは一括して「その他の局」という扱いとなり、個別の数字は特に公表されていない

The source it cites is an FAQ on their site, but it looks like they removed that section sometime in 2017. And while the FAQ itself says:

Quote:
BS放送・CS放送・CATV等の視聴率も測定し(メトロポリタン等の県域U局も)、「その他の局」として合算して集計しております。

I'm not 100% sure that actually means "その他の局" are actually excluded from the weekly rankings.
