I hope this does well. The game ended up being a lot more fun than I expected.

Yeah, I'm in for this one, despite being a video game adaptation. I am also a bit worried that the story just won't have it, or that they won't be willing to have an actual conclusion to the anime to keep the game open-ended.

Yeah, mostly this has reminded me how much I enjoyed the game. Lets hope this inspires a sequel, spiritual or otherwise.

I never played the game, but I find myself pretty invested in this story. Surprised it isn't more popular.

Loved the song moment in the game. As an adaptation, I feel this has been pretty good so far and doesnt feel to game-like. The rice farming tutorial felt more natural here.

Also the show looks really good

I own the game for this but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. That said, I'm enjoying what I've seen of this so far, and I'm curious to see how it plays out.

Unless I'm completely blanking on the Visitors, I don't think this is from the game. There isn't a whole lot of explanation about how Yui gained a human form, but gods, magic, etc. exists, so it's pretty easy to just chalk it up to one of those things.

I asked a friend of mine who played the game, and apparently the Visitors are in the game, but there presence is exactly how it is in the anime: brief, wierd, and not followed up on at all. So it might not be surprising that you could've forgotten them.

The Yui/Kinta story would be familiar to the Japanese audience since it is a straightforward retelling of “The gratitude of the crane” (Tsuru no ongaeshi), except for the aliens.

It even has the Kinta character rejecting the crane/woman because he is too poor to support her (but she has a solution for that and weaves items for sale).

Can second your friend in confirming the Visitors are in the game and just as "big lipped alligator moment"-y as they are here.

Only thing to really add is that I recall this sub-story/side quest being something that occurred only right before the very end of the game. Obviously things have to be rearranged to flow better as an anime, but it's still feels a bit odd to see Yui's capstone event occuring so early.

No offense to the reviewer but how do you see this animal -one of the most recurring motifs of traditional Japanese art- and decide that's a swan? I'm pretty sure they explicitly call her a crane in the episode, multiple times. I thought it was a typo or something but the mistake is repeated more than once throughout the review.

Something I think is worth mentioning is that this anecdote is directly referencing an old Japanese folktale, the Tsuru no Ongaeshi story (The Crane's Gratitude). In the classic version of the story, the crane was using her own feathers to create beautiful clothes for her savior to sell, and she starts growing weaker and weaker as she uses more and more of herself for his sake. I did like this take on the story because the sacrifice was mutual and they actually want to be together (romantically or otherwise) because they've grown to appreciate each other as people

@CrowLia

It made me giggle a little that the person with crow in their name shared the bird folktale background with us.

I personally wonder if aliens just showing up in video games story arcs based on folktales is normal to some degree. The same thing happens in spoiler[Okami. There's this big part of the story about this ark that carried the celestials away from the violent demons invading their homeland, with no hint of sci-fi besides the fact that the ark seems technologically advanced and has a circuit board like texture on it. Then at one point, you help a Lunarian (the race of people from the moon/celestial plane in Okami lore) based on Princess Kaguya, but instead of divine visitors bringing her home (like what happened in the Ghibli telling, I do not know how close that is to the original) you help her find her rocket ship and she literally flies to the moon in it.] It seems like even in stories where the gods are plenty enough reason for things to be weird, people like to add aliens.

No mention of the implication that humans have been there (or still may be)? Given that the boss skeletor was hanging out in an active volcano, I guess I didn't feel like dropping him into a lava pit would permanently take care of him. Especially since his crystal was damaged but not completely shattered or removed. I just feel like we might see more of him, or at least more like him. If they have time.

I feel I should mention that this latest episode is quite a divergence from the source material. spoiler[In the original game, Kokorowa didn’t accompany Sakuna, nor did Sakuna offer to get banished indefinitely; she was able to go to the capital openly after this. Kokorowa stayed behind in the capital but visited Sakuna to give her some new supplies in the game].

Interesting, I wonder if that means that they plan to make her more involved in events or even change the main story?
