TBH, I thought Spy x Family would earn more for its opening weekend.

It was in less than 3000 theaters. The trade papers seem to view it as a per theater success given Godzilla vs Kong was in double the theaters, and it outgrossed Kung Fu Panda, which was in more theaters.

It should have done better, but the competition was intense. Maybe it'll hold next weekend.

Keep in mind Spy X Family isn’t a big hot blooded action shonen. The turnout was not gonna be like DB or Demon Slayer.

While I doubt Sony is losing sleep over this release (they've had an awful start to the year and anime's low cost), this is definitely not a strong showing. 2000 theatres isn't an ultra-wide run, but it's not a limited showing and these results suggest Spy x Family wouldn't justify much larger anyways. Sony's had a bundle of release do substantially better on lower screen counts than this one. One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen also grossed notably more with 300 added locations. You might think it's not fair to compare those, but outside of Suzume (which is an original anime film, a category that's struggled to breakout theatrically in the Anglosphere, bar Miyazaki), those are the only non-event theatrical releases Crunchyroll has done. They were definitely expecting better. Spy x Family reportedly had more Imax screenings than Civil War last weekend despite the numbers suggesting that maybe wasn't a great idea.

Kung Fu Panda is a poor point of comparison. Not only has it been out for nearly two months (which means theatres earn a much larger cut of its boxoffice than they do a new release), it's a general audience family movie. That means they're likely selling more lower cost child tickets and scheduling it during earlier hours of the day. Yes, I know Spy x Family's audience isn't exclusively teens or adults, but it's clearly not got that same kind of wide appeal here.

Well below everything I saw people that follow the box office saying. For example, Boxoffice Pro was predicting $7-$15 million for its opening weekend. I didn't see anyone predict a little under $5 million.

Took me by surprise how much it underperformed given the massive popularity of the anime. Wonder how theater owners are feeling about anime after Crunchyroll made a big deal about Spy x Family Code: White. If Haikyu!! and BLUELOCK perform similarly or worse, oof. We could start to see more things going back to limited screenings rather than being released like regular movies.

At the theater I work at where for some reason anime tends to struggle despite being in a suburb near the Twin Cities, but we still give it a chance, the subbed showings did in the low single digits, while the dubbed did in the teens or twenties. First time I've seen a non-Ghibli movie have the dub outperform the sub. More people went to My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising and One Piece Film: Red subbed than dubbed for example.

It won't, anime movies usually have very weak legs. Heck, One Piece Film: Red has the 6th worst second drop of all-time with 84.4%.
https://www.boxofficemojo.com/chart/biggest_second_weekend_gross_drop/

7 of the top 160 worst second drops (69.3% or higher) belong to movies released by Crunchyroll and FUNimation (which is now Crunchyroll, LLC). Spy x Family Code: White will lose nearly all of its screens in its 3rd weekend to make room for the re-release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Tarot, and The Fall Guy.

As for "intense" competition, there wasn't. This weekend was way down from last year.

Year to date box office is way down from last year, and still well below the pre-pandemic years.

Saw it and this film was a waste of time and money.

It's no different from other shounen movies. But the other shounen movies, at least from the old days, had higher budget and good animation compared to the their respective tv series. That was part of the appeal watching non-canonical shounen movies from the old era.

But, can't say the same for this sorry arse of an excuse of 'shounen movie' since the tv series was never limited animation so the jump in quality from tv series to the movie was not much.

Big: The weekend was down, but there was competition from two other new films and the reheated leftovers of Civil War and GxK.

Saw the movie and thought it was pretty decent but not really worth going to the theater for. Had fun but if someone's on the fence about it I'd just wait until you can watch it at home.

Another million added to the pot. Please don't let it be this generation's '86 Transformers. https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Spy-x-Family-Code-White-(2023-Japan)#tab=box-office
