It is part of a larger renewal of the exclusivity deal Warner had with Ghibli, which given all the cuts being made over there, was something of a surprise.

Neat. Now the half-dozen people who watch it at home can also be left wondering how a movie where all the main characters get s#it on by parakeets won an Oscar l.

Does this mean that The Boy and the Heron will probably be on Crave in Canada, since Crave carries HBO Max content?

I don't generally bother with streaming services since I can't afford to subscribe to a whole bunch of them just to have access to a fraction of stuff that I want to watch but my brother gave my mother a year of Crave for Christmas so I at least have Crave for now.

I hope it gets released on DVD/Blu-Ray in North America. I presume it still will since it's a Ghibli film but I hate that there's even a small degree of uncertainty about western physical releases for major anime films these days.

Guess it'll be streamed by Netflix outside of the US knowing that.

Primarily, it isn't exactly a direct contract with Studio Ghibli. Both Max and Netflix are streaming all of the studio's movies (with the exception of Grave of the Fireflies) through Wild Bunch, which is the exact company who has the international distribution deal contract with Ghibli.

I wish they'd give us some kind of digital date already. I know they're doing a second theater run, but not everyone is gonna be able to see it that way.

This is my first question as well.

Probably not. Acquired/third party content is rarely included in those deals. GKIDS cut a separate agreement with Netflix for Ghibli's Canadian streaming rights.

The Crave deal doesn't include most of Max's animation originals either, due to Teletoon's long standing deal with Warner Bros./Cartoon Network.
