Nice! Looking forward to seeing P.A. Works anime adaptation of the Sakuna video game.
Really liked the anime studio's work on Canaan and Angel Beats. It would be cool if the Sakuna anime had a similar style to The Eccentric Family in terms of character designs. |

It has been a little while since PA has done an anime adaptation of a game.
Should be interesting. |

I didn't expect to see modern PA Works doing a video game adaption anime or for this to get an anime adaption, but cool!
Although I kind of hope Crunchyroll doesn't get this because that would mean Laura Post wouldn't reprise Sakuna. |

Okay, maybe I'm missing something; but PAW has 3 shows slated for this year, Mayonaka Punch is slated for Summer; Sakuna from the sounds of it will premiere in Winter, so that should leave Nanare Hananare for Spring unless they're doubling up which I'm pretty sure anime studios tend to avoid. Even if Nanare Hananare is meant for spring thats 3 anime in a row without any downtime.

I'm super excited for this, but I'm also really curious as to how this came to be? The game came out a few years ago which to me is an odd time. It's not recent enough to be "new" but it's not old enough to really develop any nostalgia. It didn't review badly, but it also wasn't really critically acclaimed. It wasn't a flop, but it also doesn't seem like it sold enough copies to be deemed really popular.
Do you think there's more of a personal attachment to this game by some of the staff/producers? |

It was a huge surprise hit in Japan.
As of 3 years ago, it sold a million copies (original target was 30,000) https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/06/sakuna_of_rice_and_ruin_dev_hoped_itd_sell_30k_copies_-_it_just_passed_one_million Caused Marvelous share price to surge so much at one point it was temporarily halted. https://twitter.com/gosokkyu/status/1328263876035579904 There have been stories of people learning to cultivate rice from the game, and of actual farmers playing it and applying their knowledge to it. It got unofficial doujin events for sharing not only character goods, but also actual rice farming products and tools. Reception seems like it was pretty good everywhere else, but it made an especially big impact in Japan. These days it tends to seem like games that hit one place hit more or less the same everywhere, so it's interesting to see that's not always the case. By the way, in the same spirit, it seems animators at P.A. Works are growing their own rice. https://twitter.com/gosokkyu/status/1766452086559170678 |

Neat. I started this, but it didn't really grab me. I am curious to see how the story goes, so I'll be checking this out

I wonder if the game VAs will reprise their roles. Especially Joe Zieja.

I did not expect Sakuna to get an anime adaptation. What's next? A Ghost of Tsushima "anime" (I quote for a reason) down the line considering it sold 1m in Japan and is beloved in Japan as well.
