I'm honestly really shocked that the Bocchi the Rock BD release is going to be sub-only considering how popular it was during the fall season, and not to mention the crazy number of clips and memes that were produced. Was it because of the crazy amount of fanfare may not quite translate to potential sales if they included a dub?

I highly doubt that's the reason, because other shows that haven't had anywhere near the level of success as Bocchi did managed to get English dubs in the years prior. Hell, when Anime NYC was going on, Yen Press sold copies of the manga there, and the first volume sold out within hours. I find it absolutely baffling that CR chose not to dub it because this show is literally printing money for them, which would absolutely justify dubbing it, but they didn't. It's been proven that BDs with English dubs tend to sell better than stuff that's just sub only in most cases. I don't know if this decision is something on CR's end, or a higher up's end, or what have you, but this is a HUGE blunder if I ever saw one, especially considering CR is a multibillion dollar media conglomerate, meaning they absolutely COULD put down the money to dub Bocchi. Seriously, it really says a lot that Discotek Media, a company that has stated multiple times that they cannot dub anything that's longer than 13 episodes due to their small size and budget, allowed a dub for Lovely Complex, a 24-episode shoujo series from 2007, to be made because the people at Sound Cadence Studios were huge fans of it and wanted to do it, and made it possible.

I suspect it’s because the songs will not be dubbed, and the disconnect between dubbed talking and undubbed singing would be weird.

Japanese licensing almost never allows dubbing of songs.

Shame that Bocchi isn’t getting a dub with its BD. It’s not about the music, since most dubs keep the licensed music un-dubbed. Is it a case where licensing companies believe it to be difficult to localize? That’s the reason people assumed Nichijou wasn’t dubbed until several years after it aired.

Well, hopefully it does get the Nichijou treatment and re-releases with a dub. And sooner, rather years later.

Of all the shows they choose release on home video Sub-Only, they choose Bocchi the Rock. Not Isekai #5872 or Bargain Bin Anime #7849; Bocchi the F_cking Rock.

Complete and utter stupidity.

I can't recall anywhere in Bocchi the Rock where there's stuff that was difficult to translate since the humor overall was pretty universal. And yeah, keeping the songs in Japanese has mostly been a standard in English dubs so I'm still baffled.

This getting the Nichijou treatment would mean that the sales would have to go beyond whatever Crunchyroll is expecting, but that's not guaranteed.

I too am still baffled that Bocchi isn't dubbed. I thought it would be like others that didn't get a simuldub for whatever reason, but was dubbed for home video. It can't have been a lack of interest considering it performed better than the many duds that even got simuldubs. The songs aren't a problem either. it is true that Funimation used to dub songs, but after Crunchyroll took over that stopped, even with a dub. If it was a simuldub, they would go back and record music for the discs, but more recent releases didn't do that, which I chalked up to the new bosses saying it was unnecessary expense.

Maybe we should create a movement, petition or campaign and use #dubbocchitherock, just like one piece punk hazard dub petition back in 2019.

@Farhanawesome
Also "Full Moon" and "Ya Boi Kongming" too as past and present examples with English dubs but with songs subbed only.

But yeah, like most of us here, its really baffling why Bocchi isn't dubbed (since they could just keep everything else dubbed, but the songs subbed.), despite the popularity. And yeah "StarDango" did bring up the Nichijou example. Which, since, it was subbed only back then (by Funi, at the time) first on home video, then eventually included a dub later in a later re-release. Hopefully its not CR "testing the waters" again, but I doubt it.
