And no cast announcement, officially or from the cast themselves, presumably because of the controversy related to the author.

Like, they felt obligated to dub it because of the series' pedigree even if they still don't want to be upfront about it.

This got a dub. I mean I know it’s popular but I’m kind of surprised it’s getting one given the elephant in the room. I’m guessing they’re not releasing who’s voicing the characters so the actors don’t get doxxed/canceled. I get why people might be upset at the actors for voicing characters in the show, but voice actors get paid so little and are all mostly freelance so they might not be able to afford to turn down these roles so I do sympathize with the actors here.

The English dub was just added yesterday? That's weird, because here in Latin America the Spanish and Portuguese dubs premiered on July 27th. I don't know if it's because the original Samurai X anime was pretty popular when it aired on Cartoon Network LA back in the late 90s. To be honest Crunchyroll Latin America has given the series' very little publicity, I think it's mainly due to Watsuki's reputation, in Argentina the manga publisher Ivrea released a new version of Rurouni Kenshin's manga recently and many of the posts on their social media criticized their decesion.

In terms of the dub's quality, well in the Portuguese version it seems the cast is different from the original anime, but Kenshin is voiced by the son of Kenshin's original VA. While for the Spanish version, CR sent it to one of their smaller studios in Cuernavaca, Mexico, which meant a complete recast since the original anime was dubbed in Colombia, the anime movie in Mexico City and the live-action films in Argentina. I listened to the Spanish dub and while not bad, Kenshin himself sounds weird, and some of the terminology is now more accurate to the original japanese, Kenshin is now referred as "Hitokiri Battousai", but in the previous dubs he was referred as "Batosái el destajador", I kind of miss those adapted terms

This should not surprise anyone. The Japanese companies obviously don't care about what the author did. And AoA and Crunchyroll don't care either and are just interested in making money.

As always the impact of these "controversies" is being greatly exaggerated. The people who know or care about them are a minority: not enough to affect is popularity, let alone to the point of not getting the dub (very few shows don't get an English dub on Crunchyroll, so it's not a high bar), but enough to cause harassment or other problems to the actors, hence the silence. They understandably don't want another shameful Hogwarts Legacy situation.

I find it truly pathetic and cowardly of them to hide the cast like this. If they are THAT afraid of getting backlash because of the author, what was the point of dubbing this at all? Just tell the VAs to turn their DMs and notifications off for a while, or tell them to private their accounts. It's not that hard. There are better options than just hiding the cast altogether.

Not too surprised. If Crunchyroll was opposed to Kenshin overall, it could have simply not licensed it at all, and not announcing the cast avoids those individuals having to deal with any flak that might have gone their way.

Seeing what happened with the Star Wars sequels or Hogwarts Legacy, they're trying to protect them from the horrible harrassment they would obviously receive. They'll probably still be recognized and found though, but it's an understandable attempt.

I really don't think you'd say "just turn off DMs lol" to someone who's getting harrassed, would you? Would you like it if someone said that to you?

You don't need to explain the obvious to me. I get why they're doing it, but it's still total cowardice to me, because it completely defeats the purpose of dubbing it to begin with.

I would at least try it to give myself some peace of mind. Are you really saying you wouldn't? Plus, my point was that I would tell them this before the dub is even announced.

I wonder if they will have any reprisals, I would like to see the core cast return. Though a completely new cast would be understandable.

It really kills me how there's basically been no marketing for this show. Months in, Crunchyroll has done nothing to promote it. No big, splashy announcements for the simulstreams, the dub dropping out of nowhere, the only big marketing push was the premier at AX that went completely flat. Everything past that reeks of contractual obligation, like Crunchyroll and Sony hope nobody will notice and start asking questions.

As for the actors, I'm not getting on their case. Work is work, especially in the dubbing scenes which doesn't pay all that much. I'll blame the executives of the show for having put them in that situation

Ambivalent on the unannounced cast. Some sympathy for wanting to prevent harassment/for them not wanting to be harassed, but this is also really stretching the range of things I think "But I needed the work" feels like a good explanation for. Makes me wonder where people would actually draw the line and no longer accept that as a person's reasoning..

How? How can you not license something if your parent company owns the property? Sony owns Crunchyroll and Aniplex both, Aniplex owns the Kenshin IP, Aniplex has exclusivity with Crunchyroll.

That's just not an option here. The only thing that could have stopped Kenshin from appearing on CR is for it to not be made at all. And lest you forget, Japan really doesn't give a shit about Watsuki's predilections, and love the Kenshin franchise.

You either cope, or you move on.
