How do you torpedo your film?
This is getting pretty ridiculous. I love Miyazaki so much but this appears a massive fumble. Zero marketing. No wider distribution, assuming because they’re not sure how to do it without marketing materials. The movie releases this week, and in the US we have no trailer, marketing material, and no projected date when we can watch it. Yeesh |

The way they're going about not marketing this at all and expecting people to just somehow telepathically know the movie is coming out, and expecting to sell tickets based entirely off Miyazaki's name and Ghibli's track record seems either incredibly arrogant, or that they are deliberately trying to scuttle it.

Can't say I'm expecting it to be good, considering the studio is clearly acting like it has a stinker on it's hands.

Wasn’t the plan for Ghibli to become a holding company that simply managed the studio’s IP until Miyazaki decided to make one more movie? Pretty sure they do not care about making money. Miyazaki is done after this, so it’s not like they need cash to finance another movie. Maybe this is his (and the company’s) way of ensuring that he doesn’t unretire again.

I assumed Miyazaki was making this decision too, but apparently not. I think it's not a smart idea, but if the movie does succeed despite no marketing, they'll have saved a lot of money. |

I've heard that Studio Ghibli is already preparing for the next film, so I'd like to believe that there is a prospect of collecting the funds for the time being.

I do not watch trailers, so, why does it matters? It's not as if Hayao Miyazaki were a new director; more or less, we all know what to expect.
As for wider distribution, I am old enough to remember when Ghibli's movies were released (if released) in obscure "indie" cinemas, along New Zealander dramas and Hungarian romcoms (no offence). So I am quite this movie will have a release overseas, too. Last edited by kgw on Thu Jul 13, 2023 7:12 am; edited 1 time in total |

Oh, so it’s Suzuki’s way of making sure Miyazaki stays retired! |

wow they really don't want people to know what the hell this film is gonna be huh? lol. I honestly really don't know what to make of it. I don't blame the cynics honestly.
now for my own opinion, given the choice I would absolutely watch this day one, but,USA resident and all haha. Arrogance?? id say he's more than earned it, being in the business for so long.(on and off, but hey, again I think he has earned it ) i may not think everything he has made is a masterpiece ,but damn has he made some fine hits |

i highly doubt that GKids (presumably who will release the film) would go with the same strategy. and doubt its gonna be released simultaneously for spoilers and what not. at this point you know if you know. you know Miyazaki and his films and pedigree or you don't. as someone who does,i view it as an event. |
