Orange has done some of the best looking i7 music videos, very excited to see an entire concert animated by them!

I have to admit I'm just so, so jealous of Idolish 7 for getting all these anime projects that actually look really good, unlike every single other male idol anime. I wish my idol franchise of choice would get something like this... when the last time they asked what new media fans wanted the franchise to expand to, I simply couldn't say "anime, duh" because it's just so amazing and rich, it doesn't deserve the low-budget dreck 99% of these shows are. It needs more love, but the exposure wouldn't be worth dragging it down to those levels. (Even something like UtaPri can't make the jump from "decent-looking" to "looks so great!", despite obviously putting in more effort & money into its visuals...)

Your jealousy is noted. Laughing

IDOLiSH7 is just such a fricking anomaly when it comes to male idol stuff. The source material is solid enough that it's been getting a (basically) 1:1 adaptation rather than an anime original side-story or minimally-plotted character showcase (I do wish we got to see the N/R/SR Takanashi idols, but it's the VN's fault for excluding them). More surprisingly, those tightwads at Bamco are actually putting in as much money as the franchise is worth, rather than scraping the bottom of the barrel. It's surreal.

But yeah, Orange always did the best MVs, so I hope this movie gets people jealous enough to see what they've been missing. I still remember the first time I played Mr. AFFECTiON and nearly failed because I was that blown away when the video started.

Yes, that probably helps, but also I think it doesn't hurt that it was one of the first male idol mobage out there (certainly the first that became popular), and it's been managed really well, so it has a very loyal fanbase as well as a constant stream of revenue from keeping that fanbase active. Most of the other large(-ish) male idol franchises had their start in different media, or different platforms, which move slower and need more investment on part of the audience, both in terms of money (buying a VN, let alone buying the hardware to play it on, is a lot more money to pay upfront than microtransactions), and in terms of attention/time (with VNs or audio dramas you've got to buy the game/CD, invest the time in playing it/listening to it, etc.). And then when you're finished with a game/audio drama then you're done and you've got to wait for the next one to drop. No wonder that many other franchises tried adding mobage to the mix, but it seems they just can't catch up, heh. Very Happy It seems most others go the stage adaptation way, which I guess works out for them, but not for me because I don't care about stage adaptations.

(Never mind franchises that are just out there enough that a mobage simply doesn't suit them well. My idol franchise of choice is HanaDoll* and it's so so so good, and it would make such an amazing anime with its near-future setting, its carefully developed worldbuilding with a fully realized and really amazing visual concept, its darker approach and its focus on mysteries that gives it a full storyline instead of the usual "stuff happens to these cute guys" thing. But the same things probably don't make it a good material for a mobage... I wish they'd do a manga adaptation, but the only volume they have out is kind of supplementary to the audio drama and they don't seem too keen on doing an actual adaptation.)

I... I see. Yes. Hmmm. I hadn't heard of it before, but now that I'm flipping through the videos, it looks almost like HoneyWorks on hard mode. (I was already sold when I saw Masuda as the short ginger. I'm so easy. Embarassed ) If the HWCU is a thing now, you never know?

But back on topic, I think this might actually be the first i7 anime that isn't an adaptation, which is kind of exciting. (Yes, even the terrorist plot gag episode in Vibrato was in the mobage, and it was a legitimate piece of foreshadowing that won't pay off until the anime gets a fourth season. Laughing )

"Hard mode" is no joke, this franchise is a fairly blatant (but really really well done) deconstruction of the idol genre, and even RL idols. From the manufactured (quite literally, in this case) nature of idols, shady companies preying on and manipulating vulnerable young men, to the spectacle of it all. The senpai group (my faves) is not even hard mode, it's insane mode, so far their story is basically one "holy cow wtf this is messed up" moment after another. Very Happy And it's really fun (er, enjoyable in a certain way? I don't even know) when the official accounts/etc. play into the conceit and do all theses yay happy positive things that come across as incredibly fake in the story's context, when you catch the characters blatantly lying in "interviews" posted on the official site, etc.
