Well, with the way they're jumping around with Progressive and trying to find excuses to throw Mito into novel stories, I guess it's simpler to just do an original anime film.
I really enjoyed Ordinal Scale so if they can deliver something 100% original of that quality, I'll be happy.
Of course they have a lot more to play around with post-Alicization so I'm curious what they'll do with it. Will it even focus on the main SAO cast?

Today is also the day the in-universe SAO game is supposed to come out. To think Heathcliff would not be Akihiko Kayaba, but rather Mark Zuckerberg.

I stopped caring about SAO long ago. But I'm surprised it is not 3rd Progressive movie or something related to a new LN arc.

Can't say I'm too surprised they're trying to find new ways to tell SAO stories. The SAO novels are starting to really catch up with what we know of the recent past in the Accel World series to the point that the current antagonist group in the SAO novels the Virtual Study Society is a very obvious precursor to the main antagonists of the AW series the Acceleration Research Society to the point that they slightly tweaked the name's English translation to try and make it less obvious. There's really only so much further the story can go forward without the two stories really overlapping so the best thing to do is go sideways.

The Progressive light novels are a great story. The movies are horrible.

I really enjoyed Ordinal Scale so I'm curious to see what they'll do and I'm always happy for more SAO.

I'm curious how many people will realize, once we get to that point, that one of the new significant characters is supposed to be Kuroyukihime's mother.
