You should check out the visual novel for Island. It's the most brilliantly written piece of media I've ever encountered. It comes from Frontwing who's responsible for the Grisaia series and also formed the committee that was responsible for the Remake our Life anime.

According to Jason Demarco, it's gonna be 4 episodes. Really excited to see what they do with it in that short time.

Forgive me for being a bit cranky but isn't producing new shows is far more expensive than actually licensing already existing ones? Their limited budget would have been better spent getting more new shows 12+ episodes worth, than spending an arm and a leg to develop a new show thats a total of 4 to 6 (FLCL) episodes long. Other than Yashahime there hadn't been a new anime for months on Toonami, they just been running double One Piece and Naruto episodes plus reruns of AoT and Made in Abyss to cover that fact.
And based on new WB -Discovery cuts to "kids" programming, expect even more cuts there.

I do believe them licensing anime is still fairly expensive not to mention the problem of licensing and airing something that’s already been seen.

All anime that airs on Toonami are technically reruns except those several that Toonami broke their bank on (count 10 tops).
And after spending twice as much for these 4-6 episodes instead of full 12-13 eps cour or two, they still lose rights to air this anime within what a year or two, or maybe after several reruns. How many times did FLCL season 2 and 3 was rerun on Toonami? Do they even still have the rights for it? Once, twice... What about Attack on Titan, DBZ/Super, etc? Nonstop.

At least those anime will be brand new to Toonami and maybe even to American TV and not incessant repeat of shows that were run and rerun on Toonami (and before Toonami) for months just to fill block time because they spent all their budget on two 4 episode shows.

I mean while that is true again licensing old stuff to air on a cable/streaming service that not that many people watch isn’t any more cost effective either. Especially not when some of the stuff being licensed is more than 25-50 episodes. They’re spending money with little in the way of a return one way or the other.

You know there are other reasons Toonami can't get new shows besides money? If Crunchyroll is refusing to license out new shows, no amount of money being thrown at them will change their mind. And Toonami is producing more originals like this because Crunchyroll won't let them license their shows. Frankly I don't understand the anime fans who still rely solely on Toonami as their only source for anime and then get shocked and mad the rest of the world has moved to streaming. Like I hope Toonami gets new shows too but Crunchyroll is like $10 a month.

Sure, Crunchyroll is $10, HiDrive is $5, VRV another 10, Funimation still haven't merged with Crunchyroll so another, don't forget other streaming services....
