A bit sad, but not surprising. It's the type of thing that would have needed reliable foot traffic to be worth the effort. Internally, prefectures seem to go in and out of states of quasi-emergency, and international tourism probably isn't happening soon. I can't blame them for deciding the space had better uses.

Sad to see it go but it is the right decision. It was one of the places I wanted to visit when I go to Japan next.

Hope to see the online store get back up in the future for intl fans.

That's too bad. I've been to the store a couple times and while the merchandise tended to be focused on whatever KyoAni's latest series was and mostly consist of character goods you could find elsewhere, it was still fun to visit while in the area. As others have said, the situation over the last two years have probably not made maintaining the store worthwhile.

The arson and the pandemic, a one-two punch that isn't really surprising. Awful day for KyoAni.

That's really bad news. I have visited their shop every time I went to Japan. At first they had a small shop in the office building near Kowata station. The first time I went there I mistakenly went to the KyoAni office near Kohata first, but they promptly guided me to the actual shop. I arrived there way after closing time, but they opened it up so I could buy something. I even got some artists to sign what I bought. That was pretty awesome.

Last time I went there was the new shop at Kohata station had just opened. I was a bit sad that the old location had closed, but the new location was much bigger and I got me some original K-On! stuff still.

And now it's all over for good. Well, it was fun as long as it lasted. Now don't mind me while I go cry a little in the corner.
