Can't argue with an article gushing about how awesome Ultraman Nexus is! And Hasegawa has done a phenomenal job with Gridman and Dynazenon...well, on any Toku he works on, really (he basically took over writing Kamen Rider Saber in the end).

I came for SSSS Gridman & Dynazenon, instead I got a history lesson about Ultraman Nexus and a primer on what makes the Ultra franchise great; love it.

The history of Ultraman is a fascinating one with a near endless rabbit hole of trivia. As far as the shows themselves, as stated here they are never lacking in ambition. Aside from often tackling mature or dark themes, there is always a level of technical craftsmanship in the filmmaking that goes way above and beyond when you remember that this series is supposed to be for kids.

It's also pretty ridiculous how much of Ultra's DNA is in Evangelion: 3 minute timers, NERV is basically a Defense Team, and even the Christian-influenced mythology (Eiji Tsuburaya was a Christian convert). Anno even snuck a clever reference into Thrice Upon A Time. I cannot wait for his Shin Ultraman film cause it really will be him fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Thank you for this write up and also introducing me to that blog detailing the production history of various Ultra series. Tons of fascinating info there that I never would have found anywhere else. It's a real treasure trove.
