I can’t believe it’s been a year. I was so saddened to learn of Zac’s death; it was devastating. I know I didn’t know him personally, but I’ve been following his career through ANN and on Twitter for years, and always appreciated his voice and sense of humor. Wishing comfort to his friends and family on the anniversary of his passing.

I should not have to say this about my friends and community's pain, but I absolutely will not tolerate posts in here about the real cause being Black people focusing on race-related injustice or gay people acknowledging their queerness.
Read the room.

Will always remember fondly the times I got to meet him at the live ANNcast panels at AX. I saw him for several years and I think he vaguely recognized me by the end. I was heartbroken last year.

Not to pry too much but it wasn't COVID that claimed Zac? I'd assumed that had been the case.

No, but I don't blame you for making that assumption. Zac died of congestive heart failure related to his ongoing battle with alcoholism which was in turn heightened due to depression. There were many factors that exacerbated this, one of which was definitely COVID which in turn made the depression even worse. During his memorial service, his friends and family talked about how his outlets all closed down; the movie theaters, Disneyland, and the gym which were all things he used to fight back his depression and were therapeutic for him. COVID also prevented him from seeing friends like he would normally.
It goes without saying that we all miss him terribly.

Made an account to say, thank you for making a public statement on this. When friends & family chose not to state the cause of death last year I think most of assumed the worst - especially for me after the memorial service. I still regularly think about Zac - watching things, and wanting to know what he would have thought of it. Wanting to hear him gush about things he had fallen in love with. ANNcast was a part of my life for about 10 years and this gave me some closure.

Really hard to believe its already been a year. I wish I was able to tell him how much I enjoyed his writing + ANNCast (the latter being especially informative for me) in person at Otakon a few years back instead of being too intimidated. He's absolutely missed.

I’ve actually gone the last year thinking the same and while I’m weeping right now, it is a weight lifted.

This article and that photo still have me thinking - he is still missed a year later. I can still hear his voice from all these podcasts.
Nowadays, "Bucharest" by The New Division has me melancholy every time it comes to mind (it had me fighting off tears during the ANNCast finale).
I appreciate how there are multiple things supporting The Trevor Project this year makes me appreciative that good charities still get funding.

Hard pass.
But yes, seriously this is a place to talk about silly Japanese cartoons and not a place to push your political agenda moral agenda or religious agenda. Thank you for deleting whatever posts you deleted from the people who are discussing those sorts of things.

That wasn't my motivation for removal. When I say "Read the Room" I mean this is literally a charity post in honor of a person who was extremely important to the staff here. This is an example of best summed up Bambi:
If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Re: you don't need to tell everyone here that you are "hard passing" on supporting it. Just don't support it and move on. It's basic decorum. A not small community of people, myself included, are grieving right now, and this isn't about you, personally and your opinion of the charity or arguments about "identity politics."
So again, read the room.

I can't believe it's been a year! I was so shocked and sad to hear about his death. I always listened to ANNCast through the years and didn't always agree with Zac's takes, but I always really loved and respected them ... his reviews and opinions on anime and other media were really thoughtful (and often hilarious!) It's really a huge loss for the anime community.

I basically never post here, I believe my last post may very well have been for Zac's memorial service which I took the day off of work to attend because he and his work touched me so greatly. I only ever talked to Zac a handful of times on Twitter, though I do often think back on him and his work fondly, the online anime community just isn't the same without him. Best of luck with the fundraising, I'm not sure if I'll be able to donate due to financial issues, but I hope you absolutely shred your goal.
