Wow, this seems... wrong to me in a lot of ways. Why would the cheap US DVD come out so far ahead of the Japanese theatrical date, not to mention the expensive Japanese DVD release? Seems like the exact opposite of the marketing strategy of every single Kon film up to now. Either this is a Sony typo or somebody at Madhouse made a big mistake.

Well, if it does in fact turn out to be accurate, that baby will be mine. I don't know what kind of distribution deal Sony has for Kon, but a rush dvd of an art house anime that would have zero chance of making money in a theatrical release (in the US anyway) may just be a case of getting their money where they can.

Whoa, now that's a quick release!! Which make me glad because that will be one my next submissions for the library collection. We so far have everything that has been released on him. So I am looking foward to this.

Not a typo, even the English website is up. And I don't see where this is a big mistake either. Why be restricted to the standard "Japan first - US second" release schedule? The movie seems to be ready now so why put it on hold? Maybe we should be asking why it's taking so long for it to hit Japanese theaters? I have a theory (though it's probably flawed) that they might be looking to win a few awards (or at least nominations) in the US so they can promote it as an award winning movie in Japan. Not that I think a Satoshi Kon movie needs that kind of padding, but you never know. Emerje |

Then wouldn't they do better with the limited American theatrical release route before a DVD release or can direct home video releases be eligible for awards? Doesn't this seem to be similar to the Advent Children scenario? |

This is GREAT news.
I'll have to talk to my uncle who's doing some work with Madhouse to find out if its actually happening this way. J B |

All they would have to do is release it in a handful of theaters for a couple of days. With three months left they have plenty of time left. Emerje |

Yeah, Sony's Japanese site says 2007. I'm guessing it's being released here, because they think it'll sell better here than in Japan.

Kon more popular in the states than in Japan? Is that true? What kind of box office numbers did his films pull off in Japan? |

What about the special features?
On a completely, OT, side-note; I saw on the website that Kevin Smith's second Q&A movie is coming out on the same day as Paprika! So it's win freaking win baby. Last edited by RezSav on Thu Jul 27, 2006 4:52 pm; edited 4 times in total |

Dargon: Dunno about box office, but Kon's films get a limited release in Japan, too. I think the most exposure he's gotten there is through Paranoia Agent, and I'm not even sure how well that did in the ratings or on home video. (Though back when his site had a BBS, there seemed to be at least a few fans of his work. It's just a shame spammers had to show up. :( ) I don't think he's necessarily more popular here than in Japan. It's probably about the same. But by going straight-to-video here, he doesn't have to weave around the Akihabara crowd to find his target audience. I'd love the film to be nominated for Best Animated Film, too, but in this current climate, the only contenders are Ice Age 2, Cars, and Hoodwinked.

I thought there was a minimum time period between a theatrical release and the DVD release for a film to be eligible for Best Animated Feature according to Academy rules.
In any event, I think that if there was any chance of even just a token LA/NY theatrical release, it would be listed as "Coming Soon" at Sony Pictures Classics, their arthouse distribution unit. Not that I think it would have any chance of winning BAF, since I think everything else animated this year is going to be steamrolled during awards season by a road surfacer pulled by Lightning McQueen, and I doubt it would even get nominated, since it's an anime film not directed by Hayao Miyazaki. |
