An incredibly gutting loss. Lupin III is probably my favorite reoccurring character in anime. Thank you for everything, Mr. Katō.

It's great there's been such a Lupin renaissance lately, so I hope he got to see how popular his work and characters got to be all over the world.

Oh I am so sad and shocked by this. He did make one of the most classic memorable characters in anime and gave work to legends in anime today including Hayao Miyazaki. RIP Monkey Punch you were a legend in anime and will always be remembered by us nostalgia anime fans.

Oh god. This one...this one hurts. I rarely feel close to tears from the death of a celebrity, someone I've never met in person and never will, but like with Robin Williams, Goro Naya, and Hiromi Tsuru before him, this one just hits me at my very core.
I don't remember when I first saw Lupin (it was one of the FUNi dubbed TV specials that I borrowed), but back then, for whatever reason, it didn't grab me. But a few years back, when Discotek put out the original green jacket series, and I experienced the franchise in it's original Japanese form, something magical happened there and I was hooked. Lupin very quickly became one of my absolute favorite things PERIOD, in the same vein of Dragon Ball, TMNT, or the works of Masakazu Katsura. I can talk about Lupin with anyone at any given time in any given situation just about. And that all comes from this man. I might not have the same level of love for the original manga (though I do wish I could read more of it than what I have), but it all still stems from Monkey Punch's hand. Godspeed, Mr. Kato. Thanks for everything. |

So sad, I hope Fujiko Mine's Lie includes a tribute before the credits.

I've been worried knowing that this would happen, the original forces behind Lupin are getting old now, but that doesn't lessen the blow. Literally no other celebrity's passing has made me this sad since Goro Naya. I hope he can rest in peace knowing that he left a wonderful mark on the world that will be forever immortalized by his fans and loved ones.

I'm caught up with everything Lupin anime related but I've never gotten a chance to read the manga because of how hard it is to find. But he recently directed a 30 minute special with lots of throwbacks to part 1 and one of my favourite movies in the series Dead or Alive. Rest in Peace.
Here's an ann interview from 2003 for those who are interested. |
