I had to see the actor credit to confirm that he's a boy at all. Considering his design and how close they are to kissing on the poster, I thought there might be some kind of "actually a girl" twist or something.

Just a vibe??? He looks and acts exactly like Kamina. The whole style (especially the BURNISH) is very very similiar to TTGL. And that blonde uniform guy looks straight outta Kill La Kill.

It is amusing how this is coming out in the same year as Fire Force. It’s like a mech movie version of it.
Also I thought blondie was a chick when I first saw the visual in the thumbnail. Honestly I’m kinda disappointed that he’s male instead.

Nah, there have been plenty of anime characters over the years who are played by actors of a different gender.

Well, yes. It's especially common for young/effeminate boys (and the occasionally woefully miscast high school boy), and has been since the dawn of anime. But if the actor is female, it's easy to play a "actually HE is a SHE" reveal for the sake of no homo, etc. Much harder when the VA is an adult male, with an adult male voice. I appreciate the disconnect, honestly.
(Although, props to Shouta Aoi and Tsubasa Yonaga for their roles as female characters in recent years.)

Given that this is a Studio Trigger anime, I’ma let it slide that even though the character’s outfits are kind of strange see as they’re supposed to be some kind of firefighters, their designs are freaking awesome.

That’s true but it’s very rare that female characters are played by men. VERY rare. And even when its happens, if a female character is voiced by a guy it’s usually as a joke. It’s mainly male characters being played by females voice actors.
This character is either a guy or gender non-conforming, since they didn’t use pronouns when describing “him”. In fact it looks like they avoided the usage of pronouns altogether.
Edit: Could also be that the characters gender is irrelevant because he isn’t human and likely only refers to himself in the first person, hence the lack of pronoun usage. Curious either way
