Why'd they lay off those people?

The official reason behind any lay-off is to cut costs.

These people weren't "fired" they were "laid off."

If that's the case, they should fire some of those American comic book artists. O_o; I'm not against American made comics...I'm just saying... -shot for being stupid-

Those artists don't work for Tokyopop, they can't be fired. They're all contracted for specific books, or the books are bought from them after they are made.

But they did lay-off their senior editor for OEL manga.

They laid these people off, and yet they have the slowest release schedule I know. This isn't look good for Tokyopop, they have so many manga, and they keep licensing more, yet they're "letting people go" - I hope their quality of magna doesn't go down... more.

They slow schedule and the lay-offs are probobly due to the same thing: manga isn't selling well or fast enough to warrent a bi-monthly scedual for most series. Tokyopop is particular seems to be having problems, especially since they don't exactly have a ton of high-quality products. While Viz can release mediocre titles under the Shonen Jump banner and already have a built in audience, alot of TP's titles seem to be struggling to fine an audience. Some people have speculated that this is the reason they're focusing on OEL and the Yaoi line: to find specialized audiences that are willing to buy a product if it's under a certain category. Of course, if this is true, they still have a ways to go for OEL...

. . . which is where I come in and nag at Tokyopop to get back in the anthology game. And I mean more than their "Manga Magazine" bit . . . a few pages of random series every four months isn't a good way to build a following.

Tokyopop already has dozens of titles that are virtually unknown. Why not stuff them together into a monthy mag and give them some time in the spotlight? Just make sure you don't have another Mixx Mag fiasco (Parasyte and Sailor Moon? WTF?) and things should take care of themselves.

That's not very precise... One of the senior editors got laid off, and he did do work on OEL titles, but ALL the editors work on OEL titles as well as licensed titles, and he was only supervisor to a small number of them. It would be more accurate to say "Other people laid off include one of the senior editors in charge of some OEL and licensed titles," etc. or just "one of the senior editors," etc.

Once again, translators can't be "laid-off," they're independant contractors, or work-for-hire, contracted for specific contracts and volumes, not "staff."

Could be the start of fall-out from the Musicland fiasco. Tokyopop and other manga publishers took a blood bath on losses from them since they have not been paid for a while and will probably never see a cent from Musicland anyway.

Actually, they will get paid, Ingram is the one who distributed manga to Musicland, and Ingram is still responsible for paying companies even during Musicland's bankruptcy.
