Well, at some point the Grim Reaper is going to make one of these claims true.

Does anyone know how many final Miyazaki films are there already?

At one point he claimed Mononoke was going to be his final film.

Tales From Earthsea could have been one of Miyazaki's attempts at a final film if they wouldn't have given it to Gorō because Miyazaki wanted to retire.

Of course, The Wind Rises is the one I most remember being publicized as "Miyazaki's final film...for real this time".

Nah, at this rate he'll be making films from the grave.

I honestly don’t care if he ever stops. Though a tear is brought to me,thinking about him working to his dying breathe.

Or have "ghost directors" making and releasing films in his name, like the way "VC Andrews" and "Robert Ludlum" books are still being published even though those authors died years ago.

And the characters were all depressingly talking about death anyway.

He'll probably live to finish it, but even if he made another "final" film, we can expect that they're all going to be "inspirational" adaptations of pre-war literature from his own past, that he wants to pass along to the shallow younger generations...
So either this film or Wind Rises, either one's a good Final final film.

On one hand I really appreciate that Japan's creators keep on creating. I kinda get annoyed when creators I like over here just make millions and then disappear. You made your millions because people wanted to see more! This is rarely the problem in anime...to the opposite extreme that people can't afford to retire.

But I am rather tired of Miyazaki's "this is the only way animation should be in order to be respected" attitude. This new title suggests a moral lecturing as well.

I kinda just want him to cut loose and enjoy the medium. Like if he was to disappear and Ghibli popped out a new movie that we only find out was his, years later. One where he could open himself up without the spotlight and the 'need' to say something. I doubt this is his last work, though. I hope he gives TV animation another go. Or take a page from his pupil, Anno, and leads an Animator's Expo.

His truly final film (from the angle he's the director or script writer) will be the one just before he dies or becomes too unhealthy/frail to continue working.

You do know that's why they put the apostrophes around "final," right?

Anyway, I'm very excited to hear about this. Up until now most people thought this new film was going to be an expansion of his Boro the Caterpillar short, and while I'm sure that would have been a wonderful film filled with imagination (ala Ponyo) I'm much more personally interested in seeing another deep Miyazaki period picture. The Wind Rises was, in my mind, a real masterpiece. If this ends up with anything like the quality that had, it'll be a great film.

3-4 years? Good luck. You're getting up there in age. Better to pace yourself.
