Why do tankoubon and light novel covers often have English on them? It's not like they are exactly catering to the English-speaking audiences of Japan. I could see it being used in the hopes of it being licensed for English-speaking markets outside of Japan. However, I think such an assumption is stretching it.

It has a "cool" factor to it. Japanese people learn the alphabet alongside their own language, so it's technically part of their cultural background, but it still looks foreign and exotic. In this case, the manga is about Holmes, so it was probably just an aesthetic decision by the author to use English in fitting Holmes' Western aura.
