"It's too mainstream for me."

... Dump her. Dump her now, Maybell, before it's too late!

Nope, I'm with Luna on this one. "Too mainstream" is a valid complaintfor these things. It's not a problem with the mainstream content itself, but with the people it brings. It's usually people who are there for one single thing, not the actual convention. Nothing wrong with that. I just can't stand to be around those people.

I've been to ComicCon only once, in 2006 once it was just starting to get really popular.

But I do agree with it got too mainstream. In fact I do I have an the perfect ender for such an argument "Hey remember Glee? Did you know one year it had a ComicCon panel?"

I understand for some shows, but that one is not one of those shows that should have NEVER had a panel there...

Surely the 'wall-slam' should be cause for concern by itself!

Nah, that's just a stupid shoujo trope.

Fair enough. It's just when I hear people say that I immediately think of this. Laughing

But Maybell was the one who kabedoned. Though it was actually a semi-reverse kabedon, leaving ample room to escape it, so that's ok.

I share Luna's frustration concerning "mainstream" conventions. The mainstream content itself isn't the problem; it's the people that is attracted to it. Many, if not most, of them are there for just a few certain events, or even just one of them, and after that, they never reappear for the next con unless at least one of these said events will reappear as well.

I'm really confused as to how this would affect your enjoyment of a convention. Are these friends of yours? Do these people frequently openly declare to everyone that the con they're currently at has only a few things they plan on doing? Like, I'm not trying to be difficult, but I fail to see how people's reasons for attending a con affect others in any way possible outside of some highly specific examples.

A big reason why I don't go to Anime Central any more is because of the crowd of people that I notice attends the con. Many of them are there particularly for the raves, with several of these people openly declaring that's the only reason they're there and openly mocking the cosplayers and attendees there for the ACTUAL convention. Considering how much time the con had devoted to the rave - including giving it an extra 2-3 hours after cancelling the Masquerade after one jerk pulled the fire alarm and forcing the con center to evacuate back in 2012, as well as booking somewhere between 5-10 different DJs just for these events over the last few years I did attend - it definitely doesn't make me want to attend it again.

I prefer going to Anime Midwest; it's much smaller, there's a little more of a wide spread in topics and not just on mainstream anime, and there's less dedication to the dances in comparison to the rest of the con's themes.

That's terrible, I'm sorry to hear that. I only got to go to Anime Central once and that was back in 2011. I had a fantastic time and never ran into such problems but it may have depended on the year or just who I encountered. While I wouldn't be able to go next year, I was feeling optimistic that my friends and I might finally get to go back in 2019. I'm still looking forward to it and honestly nerds trying to bully me for enjoying different nerd stuff than the nerd stuff they enjoy will result in me simply laughing at their stupidity but I know not everyone can so easily brush off this type of bullying and no one should have to stand for it. I would hope the con staff would be keeping an eye and ear open for this sort of nonsense and shut it down fast but even if they are it looks like it's not enough.

I'll admit that I've never gone to a Comic Con, but whenever there's one in the area I'll look it up online and... it just seems like it'd be boring for me. It's sad because all of my friends like geeky stuff but aren't big into anime, so in theory it sounds like a place we could compromise on. But I don't like Star Trek, Star Wars, or super heroes, couldn't get in to Dr. Who, and have nothing against American comics/cartoons but there aren't any I really follow either. So... I'd maybe get to pick up some cute Pokemon crafts in the Artist Alley.

On the other hand, I understand why those same friends aren't terribly excited to go to anime cons with me either, because they probably feel about the same way. If they don't have Attack on Titan or old Gundam Wing stuff then there's nothing they've even heard of. So they get to spend their time... in Artist Alley looking at Pokemon stuff. Laughing

My main issue with American conventions is they tend to be all over the place. ComicCon you would assume would be about comics and comic based movies and shows, but as has been pointed out you get stuff from everywhere. Call of Duty, random sitcoms, Game of Thrones. It's more of a general mainstream popular media showcase. I haven't been in over a decade, but I imagine there probably more of a focus and bigger draw on the MCU and CWverse stuff than their comic origins these days, which I have no interest in. Anime conventions I've never been, but heard similar horror stories about. MLP/Homestuck invasions, and similar general unrelated content.

I saw Maybell* and I knew this strip would rule. Now I have hopes this arc will rule. I really look forward to her relationship with Luna slowly going Mulder and Scully, too.

*In truthfulness I didn't remember her name before reading the strip.
