Being a dude I am obviously not into yaoi but as far as traditional shoujo romance manga go, I'm a fan of things like Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun, Princess Jellyfish, and Ouran High School Host Club. The heroine is usually a clutz, and I dig a girl who actually feels human and relatable.

I can enjoy a majority male cast as long as they have entertaining interactions with each other, and not just the protagonist. Just my outside perspective - I like girly things once in a while too Wink

LOL

It couldn't possibly be because shoujo and josei manga have cookie-cutter plots. Or that "romance" in shoujo and josei manga involves lots of blushing, and maybe...a peck on the lips. It couldn't possibly be that these women want to see characters having sex. Nope, not at all.

So what does it mean, if I am girl, that prefers GL over BL? Which I actually am by the way. (Citrus. <3) Did his study think about that? Girls who prefer GL are so overlooked. I also like Shoujo stuff too. I will watch/read almost anything. Least favorites are Mecha/BL though.

Ah yes let's blame the patriarchy. I can't take this study seriously. I hate this feminist garbage where women are constantly blaming men for everything that goes wrong in their lives. He's reading way too much into fiction.

The issue at hand is the trend in writing and not necessarily what knee jerk reactions as observers we come up with.

It comes up with a number of reasons, that the Japanese consumer is more apt for the "woe is me" female lead in "romantic" set ups, they aren't necessarily looking for some sort of stout role model as they are a sympathetic character (emphasis on the pathetic).

this is comparable to the overused modern trend of Light Novels using the "teleported into another world" plot device to kick off there narrative when they simply could have told a story in the modern world.
A romance story doesn't always need a heroine who is overly distressed with a blatant inferiority complex waiting for the "cool prince of the academy" to sweep her of her feet, but if you are a writer trying to play it safe you are going to write another Cinderella story where the heroine ends up with the prince.

Let's all make sure to keep it civil given the more volatile nature of the topic and the responses we typically see regarding it. Thank you.

I can totally see this guy and his research making a guest appearance in Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun.

I'd be curious to see the stats broken down into shoujo/josei series written by men and those written by women, to see if there is any differences in those percentages mentioned in the article.

So what girls truly want are pretty boys who are good at stuff. Shocker.

With this data at our fingertips we can now create the ultimate shoujo manga love interest.

A good looking bisexual handyman who's good at sports with average income aristocrat descendent whose an animal loving and animal shapeshifting musician gardener whose mood-swings conveniently align with what she happens to be looking for with a kind instructive mother and young sister/brother twin siblings with a tragedy in his past that is his weakness which the girl protagonist just happens to have the life long solution for.

This is gonna be money in the bank!

This is why I prefer Arina Tanemura; her heroines are almost NEVER "inferior" to the boyfriend; both characters have their flaws but the heroine is normally emotionally stronger than the boyfriend and he is the one to pursue her first but she is the one in control of what happens between them.

Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne is a perfect example of this.

See Japan is yet again behind the times.
Give those poor women the option to change sex and problem solved. Laughing

wait so women like it when average, unremarkable girls manage to land amazing, attractive boys? How is this a finding worth writing a book about? Isn't it exactly the same thing in reverse in 99% of shonen manga??

It's actually quite simple why (straight/bi) women love BL.

One guy = hot
Two guy = hotter

Also BL is one of thew few erotica aimed at women. Many hentai/porn aimed at men, and there's few erotica aimed at women so they read BL. So it's not like women read BL because they hate themselves.

I hope you're joking because it sounds like you could have had a hand in writing this book with an assumption like that.

With logic like that, I could just stick to reading reverse harem manga and save myself the headache of waiting for DMP to license the next volume...or tracking it down on Amazon for the low, low price of $400.
