Quite a few of the classics I haven't watched but have read: Dragon Ball, Rurouni Kenshin, Fist of the North Star and Card Captor Sakura through the entirety of it, and Love Hina for like 6 pages before I rated it as complete garbage and gave up. Tenchi Muyo is the next manga on my to-read list, too.

^ Me too, except I didn't read but watched a little before deciding it "wasn't for me". Also, it seems 24% of ANN viewers didn't get this message:

Seriously disappointed at the lack of Astro Boy on the poll. :/
There are a bunch of older series I'd consider more classic than some of those, like Space Battleship Yamato, Macross, or Future Boy Conan. I like Love Hina, but come on... No nod to Speed Racer, Mazinger Z, or Gigantor?

Haven't seen the original Gundam. Haven't seen all of Lupin (did watch all of the original series). Perfect Blue has been on my to watch list for awhile, waiting for some vacation time. Otherwise, seen the rest.

This list of classic series is obviously aimed at North American audiences, because in Latin America we got other series.
Among the classics down here, we should add Gekko Kamen, Captain Tsubasa, Saint Seiya, Candy Candy and even the old Gatchaman series.
I'd also include Mazinger, due to chronological value.

Huh, first time a list reflected mine perfectly. I actually can't think of anything missing here.

The only classic I have not watched/read is Rurouni Kenshin. From that list of classics I would take out Dirty Pair, Tenchi Muyo and Love Hina, and I would add Escaflowne, Nausica of the Valley of the Wind and Princess Mononoke.

You do realize that Perfect Blue is a 81 minutes movie? It should not take much of your time to watch it.

Is Love Hina seriously on a poll of 'anime classics'?
First off, it's newer than anything else on the list. Secondly... well... it just... doesn't belong.
Anyway, if we're going for 90s and before stuff that had a big impact in Western fandom, lack of anything Rumiko Takahashi seems a huge oversight. It's probably my least favorite series by her, but Ranma 1/2's impact on fandom in North America was massive, for example.
That being said, this is operating under the assumption that the choices in this poll were selected by ANN staff.

Tenchi Muyo while not the first is generally regarded as the father of the modern fantasy harem, and the high water mark of the first two ova are still regarded by many as the high point for harem shows in general. The ova is still getting a release this year 20 years later, and the show has spawned at least 5 spin offs, video games, and countless other merchandise. Just because you don't like a genre doesn't make a show any less a classic.
Escaflowne on the other hand just feels like an updated Aura Battler Dunbine and its shoujo leaning don't really do much to curry it any favor. Not to mention unlike Tenchi and others on the list, it had the one show and a movie and thats kind of it. No lasting legs which is usually a hallmark of a classic franchise.
Also Cowboy Bebop and Love Hina the manga started at roughly the same time, so content aside, you can't ding it for me the "newest" one.
Personally I would put the original Last Exile on the list, Vampire Hunter D, Ranma UY, and a few others.
Although I feel like the list is like someone said more of a US classic list since most of the series coincide with the first big anime boom in the US in the 1990s.

If we are going for a newer anime as well, I would also add Detective Conan, Pokémon and Digimon on the list of classics. Come on, don't kill me, but be honest, for many these things were introduction to anime (though Detective Conan probably not in North America, but in a lot of Europe, that's really the case for some anime fans).

Although I admit that anime's view of the Wild West can be considered a little strange, that's what also makes it fun and interesting. It's always fascinating to see how others do things like Westerns. I don't mind this in the slightest and hope to see a lot more of it,at least, that's what I'm hoping for.

I've more or less seen all of, or as much of, those classics as I'm interested in. Rose of Versailles being the only major exception. Which I will get to pretty soon, hopefully. I could see myself watching more Lupin, but Tenchi Muyo, Love Hina, and Fist of the North Star are not my thing at all.
@Hiroki not Takuya
Taking this like a real adult, eh? I thought we came to an understanding. Anime is an amalgamation of many styles. That is my point.
I'd appreciate it if you didn't spam other threads with out of context quotes from that discussion. If you want to talk about it, the other thread is still there.

What series not included in the poll do you consider classics? Plenty which other replies have covered a good deal of (Macross, Detective Conan, more than one Rumiko Takahashi series, Saint Seiya, Space Battleship Yamato, Escaflowne...) and I would add Kimagure Orange Road and City Hunter.
Plus more than one series list in the poll as a classic makes me wonder what crieteria was used in the selection process.

Ugh, Wild Arms TV was absolutely awful. I warn anyone to avoid this one at all costs, especially if you're a huge fan of the series like me (all games beaten and still own them to this day). Like Star Ocean EX's stupid alternate take on Star Ocean 2, Wild Arms TV has nothing to do with any of the games and contains nothing but nonsensical episodic stupidity about some pretty bland one-shot characters. The only, and I do mean only, shining spot is the two Popepi Pipepo; they're hilarious, especially Jerusha, but even these two cute five millennia-old mice can't save an otherwise crappy show. Do not watch and spare your Wild Arms love this abomination!
On a more positive note, I've had some interest in watching Gun x Sword.
Quote: | Ah, Wild Arms, I never did escape your impossible maze when I was 12. |
Do you mean the Maze of Death, Lynzee? That definitely was one of the more trying dungeons in the first game, especially when you had to escape under a three minute time limit and fight a boss that was rather tough so early in the story.
