hmmm, well i guess you might like things like Ai Yori Aoshi (its like Love Hina but more heavily focused on the romance aspect), and maybe even Mahoromatic (word of caution, that contains a disturbing about of underaged fanservice, but i find that alot of girls still like it)
Kare Kano is one of the few Shojo (girl's anime) i watched and enjoyed, the only other being Fruits Basket. so i guess Fruits Basket would be your best bet. its really good

You could try Tenchi, it's really funny, not to mention classic. But, newer stuff considered, Tenchi Muyo GXP would be a great series to watch as well.

Tenchi is more comedy than romance, but still very nice. It's actually subtly romantic, with what's going on between Ayeka, Tenchi and Ryoko.

It's funny you say that as a girl, you're addicted to shows like Love Hina and Hand Maid May, since those are shounen romances. Most of the other recommendations in this thread would be good to try though, especially the Tenchi ones.

Hmm... judging from her tastes, Marmalade Boy might be a little too frilly for her tastes.
You would probably like Onegai Teacher, Ah! My Goddess, as well as maybe Steel Angel Kurumi. Maybe even something like Mahoromatic or Chobits would suit you.

My suggestion is Chobits , it's some what similar to love hina and is sorta funny in the same way. All in all, it's worth seeing.

Fushigi Yuugi, I think, is an excellent choice. But beware, there's a whole lot of melodrama and enough plot twists that may make it seem cheesier than a soap opera. I still like it though, regardless (because some soap operas have bad actors ). Although, if you give it a watch, please watch it in Japanese because the dubbing is as bad as some of the "bad acting" I was referring to .
I've only seen a few episodes of Onegai Teacher and Chobits, but those are pretty fun to watch also, and the dubbing sounded Ok, I guess.
X (TV) is categorized as shoujo, but it's a lot more action oriented. It does have its moments though... . I'd say it's good in either language (though I prefer it in Japanese).
Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuioku-hen is a masterpiece, but it's strictly a tragedy, if you know what I mean . Same thing with Jin-Roh, nothing but gloom and tragedy, but maybe I'm just weird in watching sad titles... . I suggest watching Kenshin in Japanese, and Jin-Roh in either language.
And finally, GTO is a lot more comedy and drama, but it has a little romance here and there. PLEASE watch this series in Japanese at least the first time through, I guarantee you'll like it. And check out the live action GTO as well. It's some of the best drama I've seen .

I second on going with Steel Angel Kurumi and Chobits, they're both good anime, GTO is good too. You might want to try Ranma 1/2 too, it's a long series, but it's a good dose of fun and humor with that splash of romance you see ocassionally. It also has tons of action.

I will suggest FY as well. Fushigi Yuugi is a beautiful, action/romance/fantasy series that I think all must watch. Also watch Tenchi^^.

i heard kimagure orange road was the cornerstone of all the drama/romance stuff. also, Stellvia is another series that just recently got licensed and you may want to check it out.
if you don't mind checking out fansubs, look for Da Capo, Kanon, and Full Moon wo Sagashite. i'd probably go with Da Capo first, since the first half has the shounen love comedy elements which ease it into the more dramatic second half.
